Vaccination Week in the Americas, 25 April – 2 May 2015
We invite you to celebrate VWA 2015 this year and boost your power with vaccination!
The 13th Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) will be celebrated from April 25th to May 2nd, 2015. The regional slogan for VWA 2015 is “Boost your power! Get vaccinated!” Vaccines are weakened or killed pathogens that help your immune system fight diseases. Vaccines do not make you sick, but prepare your body to fight off disease when exposed to full strength pathogens in the future. Vaccines boost the power of your immune system and fight off more than 25 different vaccine-preventable diseases. To read more on how vaccines boost your power, check out How Vaccines Work.
VWA is an extraordinary effort led by the countries and territories of the Americas to advance equity and access to vaccination. VWA activities strengthen the national immunization programs by reaching out to populations with little access to regular health services, such as those populations living in urban fringes, rural and border areas and in indigenous communities. Since its inception in 2003, more than 519 million individuals of all ages have been vaccinated under the framework of VWA. Vaccination Week in the Americas also provides a highly visible platform to raise population awareness regarding the importance of immunization and to keep vaccines on the forefront of political agendas.
Vaccination Week in the Americas has been included as one of the five memorable moments in public health by the Global Development Professionals Network of the Guardian Newspaper (U.K). Read more
