High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for death worldwide. One in three adults has hypertension, which increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. This is the theme of this year�s World Health Day, which is celebrated every April 7. In observance of World Health Day, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) convenes a panel of experts to talk about this problem and its impact in the Americas.

World Salt Awareness Week: "Less salt, please!"

Everyone can play a role in reducing salt intake to improve health. The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is joining the call for �Less salt, please!� during this year�s World Salt Awareness Week. The March 11�17 campaign urges everyone to help reduce dietary salt, with a focus this year on chefs, caterers, and others who prepare food for consumption outside the home.

New PAHO Director will promote universal health coverage, make �health a driving force for change�

Dr. Carissa F. Etienne took office today as the new Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), pledging to work in close partnership with PAHO member countries to extend the benefits of health progress to all people in the Americas. Dr. Etienne�s highest priority will be accelerating progress toward universal access to quality health care. "Of the many opportunities and challenges this Organization and our Member States face, one goal stands atop all the others. It is providing universal access to health care across the Americas,� she said. �No other single achievement would contribute more to ensuring a long, dignified and productive life.�

World Cancer Day 2013

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and accounted for 1.2 million deaths in the Americas (2008), 45% of which occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean. Each year on 4 February, PAHO/WHO supports the Union for International Cancer Control to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer. Preventing cancer and raising quality of life for cancer patients are recurring themes of World Cancer Day. This year World Cancer Day 2013 will focus on dispelling damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer, under the tagline �Cancer - Did you know?�.

Pan American Health Organization celebrates 110th anniversary

Washington, D.C., 4 December 2012 (PAHO/WHO) � The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) this week marks the 110th anniversary of its founding in 1902 as an international organization dedicated to protecting and advancing public health in the Americas. At 110, PAHO is the world�s oldest international public health agency.

Representatives of Suriname, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, and Uruguay�five of PAHO�s 10 original founding countries�were among the guests at the anniversary event.�
