Be part of a global movement to make cities healthier. World Health Day 2010 will focus on urbanization and health, with the global campaign 1000 cities, 1000 lives.
Urbanization is one of the greatest health challenges in the 21st century; Urbanization is a trend that’s here to stay. In 2007, for the first time in history, over half the world’s population was living in cities. By 2030, 6 out of every 10 people will be living in urban areas.
Urbanization is associated with many health challenges related to water, environment, violence and injury, non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases), unhealthy diets and physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol as well as the risks associated with disease outbreaks.
This unprecedented global event involving 1000 cities will result in physical, mental and environmental health benefits, substantial opportunities for small business and an overall boost in the well-being of participating cities and their citizens.
In Suriname, PAHO and United Nations System together with the Government of Suriname will be celebrating World Health Day “ Healthy Children in a Health City” on Tuesday April 6th at Sophia`s Lust. This will be a whole day activity beginning at 09:00 am to 06:00 pm, and will involve sporting activities,
