Using Science and Technology to Improve Health Globally
For Elliott School alumnus Guillermo Troya, serving as the country representative for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Suriname often presents him with situations that are tough to face. However, he says the work he does and change it produces keeps him going. "It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to serve others and to contribute to building more inclusive societies with a human rights, gender, and equity approach," said Dr. Troya via email from Suriname. Make a pledge to a healthier life on World Cancer Day - Together it is possible
On World Cancer Day 4 February 2012, PAHO/WHO and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) are asking everyone in Suriname to make a pledge to join in the global fight against cancer - it is only by every person, organization, and government doing their part that the world will be able to reduce premature deaths from this devastating disease. One in three cancer deaths can be prevented through changing lifestyle habits, such as eating healthily, exercising regularly, not smoking and reducing alcohol consumption. Therefore, a key mission of World Cancer Day 2012 is to collect pledges and encourage people across the world to commit to positive lifestyle change to reduce their cancer risk.

Experts Call for Major Investments in Water and Sanitation to End Cholera in Haiti and the Dominican Republic

(PAHO/WHO), UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) today in calling for major international investments in
water and sanitation infrastructure to eliminate cholera from the
island of Hispaniola.
