Initiative Description

Summary
PAHO and the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) entered into an agreement to collaborate in the development and implementation of an integrated program on environmental health for the Caribbean. The goal of this initiative was to strengthen the technical cooperation that PAHO/WHO and CEHI provide to the countries of the Eastern Caribbean and also to promote joint action in the improvement of the use of resources in order to contribute to improved health and environmental conditions in the countries served.

PAHO’s and CEHI’s environmental health programs both operate in an environment with common threats and opportunities, shared among countries. A combined program with a shared vision and symbiotic mission, combining human and financial resources, promotes a more harmonized approach to the rising environmental health problems in the region.

The Technical Cooperation among Countries (TCC) project enabled the sharing of experiences between the countries and it also allowed PAHO and CEHI to develop a strategic plan for technical cooperation between PAHO, CEHI and the countries and territories of the Eastern Caribbean. It also contributed to the design and execution of a Plan of Action for the implementation of the agreement between PAHO and CEHI that will have synergy and coherence with the priorities and needs of the countries in this area. The TCC also created a forum that for the first time ever brought three national stakeholders together and exchanged experiences and ideas on PAHO-CEHI collaboration and institutional strengthening at a national and regional level.
