Initiative Description
Summary
In 2007, after 45 years of eradication of malaria, Jamaica had an outbreak of Plasmodium falciparum. The outbreak highlighted the need for non-endemic countries like Jamaica to increase their capacity for surveillance, treatment of malaria as well as prevention and control of outbreaks which can occur after elimination.
Cuba is known not only for its excellence in medicine but also for its expertise in Tropical Medicine. Since the country has a substantial amount of experience in vector control, entomological monitoring and surveillance, the Ministry of Health, through its Foreign Relations Ministry, expressed its compromise to aid Jamaica in this particular arena so that they could build their capacity to control and prevent malaria outbreaks.
