Initiative Description

The purpose of the Specialization Course is to train directors and professionals interested in managing social programs and health services for older persons and trying to improve their competencies and abilities to be leaders in the promotion of healthy aging. The final project in the course is a proposal of a health intervention for older persons. The Specialization course is Region-wide, with students from throughout the Americas, and it is carried out through the `Virtual Public Health Campus` of PAHO. It takes a blended approach with some sessions completed in person and the rest is distance learning. It is centered on self-learning through on-line tutors (there is one tutor for every group of eight students). The course is currently offered in Spanish and Portuguese, with bilingual tutors and is in the process of being translated into English for the professionals of the English-speaking Caribbean to be implemented in February 2013.

The teaching methodology is centered on the student and the learning is based on daily problems that managers in healthcare face. Case studies and comparisons of actual examples and current technologies are discussed interactively in the virtual network, in order to encompass the diversity of socioeconomic and cultural situations that are present in the region. This permits the sharing of in-the-moment practical experiences and promotes the self-teaching and building of one’s own knowledge as well as that of the region as a whole. The Specialization Course was created with the understanding that the acquisition of competencies needed to carry out manager work, combined with new informative technologies could create a vital instrument in the improvement of the management of health institutions, democratizing the training, and generating new knowledge in the field.

The program is in the 5th cohort- the 6th will have its in-person phase in November 2012 in Argentina. Some of the final project proposals of past students have been implemented with very successful results. Many of our graduates are currently holding leadership positions in the institutions they work for. Between 2009 and 2012, 200 students and 93 graduates (from the first three cohorts) were actively employed in the healthcare field in 14 Latin American countries. In May 2012, the Specialization Course was chosen to be highlighted in the \"Knowledge from the South\" Fair - a regional exchange of development solutions, sponsored by the Regional office of the UNDP for Latin America and the Caribbean.
