Health authorities of the Americas meet at the 52nd Directing Council of PAHO

The 52nd Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO), and the 65th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Americas is taking place from 30 September-4 October.

Among other issues, Argentina and the Caribbean countries, along with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) met in order to make progress in the preparation of a joint work plan for cooperation in health in follow-up to an agreement signed in Buenos Aires in June 2013. This meeting took place as a parallel session of the Directing Council.

United Nations Day for South South Cooperation

Marking the tenth United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, 12 September 2013, Member States and UN officials are highlighting the scaling up of South-South flows of trade, investment, technology, and know-how as an increasingly important dimension of development co-operation.

“More and more developing countries are turning to each other to address development challenges,” said H.E. Ambassador John Ashe, President of the High-level Committee for South-South Cooperation, noting the need for inclusive, responsive and creative solutions and the role of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation in ensuring development results.

Consultative meeting on Achieving Universal Health Coverage

Last 12 and 13 September health experts met at the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to take stock of regional advances in the mobilization of universal health coverage, including efforts to expand access to health care with financial protection.

The Consultative Meeting on Achieving Universal Health Coverage in the Americas was organized by PAHO/WHO with collaboration of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative, and with support from the Rockefeller Foundation.

Haiti and Dominican Republic continue to work together to control and eliminate cholera

The Regional Coalition for Water and Sanitation to Eliminate Cholera in the Island of Hispaniola was established in June 2012 by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), UNICEF and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Coalition provides technical expertise on cholera control and elimination to the governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and is working to mobilize resources to support the two countries’ 10-year national action plans for eliminating the disease by 2022.

First CELAC-EU Summit held in Chile (26 – 27 January 2013)

According to the Chilean government:  

Latin America and the Caribbean as allies of the European Union in pursuit of its economic recovery

“On 26 and 27 January the Heads of State and Government of the 61 countries that make up the Community of Latin American & Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU) will gather in Santiago de Chile with the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission.

The central theme of the first CELAC-EU Summit will be: “Alliance for Sustainable Development: Promoting Social and Environmental Quality Investments”.

Although the summit will continue the thriving dialogue of the six previous summits between the Latin American and Caribbean States and the European Union, this is the first time that the Latin American and the Caribbean regions gather under the same umbrella, CELAC.

It is also the first time that all three branches of government will participate in this bi-regional partnership. The summit of leaders in Santiago will hear the bi-regional recommendations established by multiple Civil Society forums and the Judicial Power Summit. …”

High Level Meeting of the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) – December 2012

The High Level Meeting of the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) was held in London on December 4-5.  According to the HLM website, the meeting focused on “three strategic issues:

  1. Post-2015 development agenda: delivering strong messages of support from the DAC Membership for the UN-led effort to identify a successor framework for the Millennium Development Goals, and on what this framework must include.
  2. Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation: reviewing actions agreed in Busan in 2011 and examining how the DAC will contribute to the Global Partnership.
  3. External development finance: analysing a future development finance framework and the strategic role of official development assistance in that context. participants discussed a wide range of development assistance issues, including the changing global context for Development Assitance. ”   Continue reading »
