Welcome to PAHO's Health and Tourism initiative. As tourism has continued to grow internationally and in the Latin American and Caribbean Region, PAHO has worked to ensure that this increasingly important economic and social activity intersects with and connects with public health and development issues in a positive way, contributing to better health for tourists and local populations, and encouraging cooperative work between key actors and organizations within these fields. PAHO has been engaged in work relating to Health and Tourism since the 1990s, when focus shifted from exclusively tourist oriented strategies to tourist, host country, and host population oriented strategies, bringing Health and Tourism into the sustainable human development sphere.

Today, PAHO’s Health and Tourism program continues to work toward a vision of tourism which incorporates “health for all”, and its primary objectives include the promotion and implementation of sustainable tourism projects and the establishment of a permanent forum of discussion between strategic partners on health, tourism, social and human development.
