The unique geographic conditions and limited infrastructure in La
Mosquitia, compared to other departments of Honduras, complicate access
to health care. For instance, transport to and through most areas of
the regions are only possible by air and water. High cost of
travel,large distances to health facilities, increased travel time due
to poor road conditions, lack of communication technology, among other
factors cause major delays in seeking, reaching and receiving medical
care.
La Mosquitia has implemented a number of measures to improve health to achieve the Millennium Development Goals
