Sub-Regional Workshop on Pandemic Influenza Preparedness and Response: Caribbean Experience and Less

9-11 September 2009-� Barbados - BACKGROUND. Important efforts and resources have been invested worldwide in recent years in preparations to respond to pandemic influenza. For the last three years, the Caribbean countries have been working towards improving its capacity to respond to pandemic influenza. To date, all countries have developed National Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Plans (NIPPP), and several preparedness activities were instituted to respond timely to a pandemic event. Ministries of Health have built capacities in early detection, investigation and response including strengthening health service preparedness to execute health sector interventions and containment activities. On the other hand, National Disaster Offices were involved in the national coordination of preparedness and response actions in the light of such emergency.

This�the third phase of Caribbean Cooperation in Health (CCH) has benefited from the experience and wisdom accumulated during the two previous phases.� The first CCH initiated in 1984 was oriented towards the highest health priorities of the region and sought, through projects to operationalise those strategic requirements intended to address the gaps in the regional health agenda.

The Office of Caribbean Program Coordination

The Office of Caribbean Program Coordination (OCPC) is a PAHO sub-regional office established in the Caribbean in October 2006. The functions of the Office are focused on developing and implementing the Caribbean sub-regional technical cooperation program, responding mainly to the CARICOM Health Agenda � the Caribbean Cooperation in Health (CCH) Initiative. Accordingly, the OCPC will strengthen its collaboration with and support the CARICOM Secretariat in all matters related to health.

Workshop on mental health in emergencies � Belize, Central America, July 2008

During the last week of July the mental health program of CPC, in collaboration with the PRW Belizeand PED CPC, organized a workshop on mental health in emergencies. The workshop was attended by the mental health staff, doctors and public health officers, representatives from the Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Human Development, NEMO, UNICEF, Red Cross, University of Belize.
