Universal Access to Health: Applying Technologies to Achieve the Dream

We have technologies that enable us to improve access to health services as well as their efficiency and quality.

As Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), I am committed to advancing universal health coverage in the Americas. My dream is that every individual can have access to the health care that they need, when they need it, and where they need it. ICTs can bring us closer to realizing this dream.

eHealth Experience: Caravanas de la Salud in Mexico

Caravanas de la Salud is a telemedicine initiative by the government of Mexico that, through ambulant health teams, brings health services closer to people living primarily in isolated areas. This population usually lacks timely medical attention due to its geographical location, dispersion and/or conditions of access. This situation makes it difficult and in some cases impossible to establish fixed medical units in the short term.

The initiative has contributed to improving the supply of health care, expanding the coverage in a cost-effective and high impact approach. Currently the telemedicine program has 1,448 mobile medical units that benefit 3,839,056 people in 21,414 locations.
