PAHO/WHO and the Use of Social Networks

On May 2006, the Director of PAHO/WHO launched her BLOG as a contribution to the development of information technologies and the information society's knowledge sharing initiative, to get in touch with the people and health professionals throughout the region of the Americas.

In the same year, in November, The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference which met in Antalya (Turkey) decided to henceforth celebrate 17 May as World Internet Day.

These events aim at highlighting the importance of world-wide access to information and promoting knowledge sharing in today World.

PAHO/WHO is convinced that access to health information is an integral aspect of human rights, requiring us to network with partners that will enable us to expand our local and regional capacities and thus multiply the available social capital in our countries. In this regard, we are working on the use of emerging information technologies and methodologies for knowledge management and communications and have decided to adopt web 2.0 tools and methodologies as a new way of work in the Organization and with member states.
