This week in the eHealth Virtual Dialogues: 26-30 November

This week, professionals continued to debate ideas and to reflect on the present and future of eHealth in the Americas, as they participated in the project "eHealth Conversations: " of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). Among others, they discussed the following eHealth topics: infrastructure, telemedicine, access to information, policies, education, and electronic medial records.

In the infrastructure conversation, the discussions centered on how national research and education networks can sustain and expand knowledge in health. Participants were asked to consider the various ways that the communications infrastructure necessary for national and provincial networks in the Americas could be obtained.

Project participants also discussed the foundations for and principles of national and provincial telemedicine and telehealth programs, and the classification and replication of best practices in telehealth.

The quality of information and accreditation mechanisms and the priority of ensuring access to technologies to reduce health-care gaps were discussion items in the virtual dialogues on access to information.

The eHealth policies conversation coordinator asked participants to consider whether eHealth is really the solution for health care in remote areas and what policies would be needed to achieve it.

The application of information and communication technologies to learning, also known as eLearning, was another topic of conversation in the project this week. Discussions included how distance education for health professionals can make teaching more creative and how sharing experiences through collaborative virtual forums is one more method of continuing education.

In the dialogue on electronic medical records, their benefits to the population were discussed along with the relationship between the quality of these records and clinical decision support systems. To delve further into this discussion, a webinar on clinical decision support systems was held this week. (The recording is available in Spanish here.)

PAHO/WHO’s eHealth Conversations project is being implemented within the framework of the Strategy and Plan of Action on eHealth for the Americas. The end product will be a publication that will present the conclusions drawn from these dialogues—to be updated periodically and disseminated by PAHO/WHO.
