Washington, D.C., 16 de noviembre de 2012 (OPS/OMS) – The VII Hospital Conferences on Health Information Systems organized by Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires in Argentina will take place 28-30 November 2012 and with the participation of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization, among others.

The event is free of cost and open to participation via virtual collaboration. To participate, registration in the event's site is required.

Addressing the topic of health information systems, the event will be attended by professionals from various disciplines, including PAHO/WHO Subregional Adviser Myrna Marti and the Manager of Information Methodologies at PAHO/WHO’s Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME), Renato Murasaki.

The conference agenda aligns with the principles of PAHO/WHO’s Strategy and Plan of Action on eHealth, whose objective is to contribute to the sustainable development of the Member States’ health systems, including veterinary public health.

With regard to information systems, this strategy and plan of action specifically mentions promoting the use of epidemiological surveillance services, including the human-animal interface, through the use of information and communication technologies. One of the indicators will reflect whether the target of 26 countries by 2015 are using epidemiological surveillance services through information and communication technologies. By that year, 26 countries are also targeted to have made mobile technology part of their epidemiological surveillance systems.

PAHO/WHO will also address the topic of information systems in its project e-Health Conversations: Information Management, Dialogue, and Knowledge Exchange to Approach Universal Access to Health, led by Marcelo D’Agostino, Manager of the Knowledge Management and Communication. The conversation on information systems will be coordinated by Dr. Fernan Gonzalez Bernaldo de Quiros, head of the Internal Medicine Research Area at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires.

This activity supports Strategic Area 2, “Improve public health through the use of tools and methodologies based on innovative information and communications technologies,” specifically Objective 2.2.
