Introduction
PAHO initiated the radiological health activities in the 1950s, and in 1960 a Unit of Radiation Protection was established officially at the regional level. The activities currently encompass Diagnostic Imaging services, Radiation Therapy, Technologies in Radiomedicine, and Radiation Protection and Safety of the public, patients, workers and environment.
The main purpose is to advise on all the fields of Radiological Health emphasizing on the orientation of policies and programs, to strengthen the processes of assessment, incorporation, and the utilization of the appropriate technologies in diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy services. It also is involved in the planning of these services and the delivery of health care effectively and with quality, and guarantees the requirements of protection and radiological safety.
The work to carry out is immense, and strategic partnerships are very important. In the clinical field, we are in collaboration with various global and regional professional associations such as the CIR, the ISRRT, the ALATRO, the ALFIM, and the ALATRA. In the field of radiation protection and safety, we work closely with the IRPA. PAHO is an active member of two International committees known as IACRS and IACRNA.
In addition, PAHO works with several Collaborating Centers, institutions and experts in the Region. This Web site contains technical documents of PAHO, and some links with access to tools and documents in order to facilitate the processes of improvement in every aspect that encompasses Radiological Health.
