Gender and Health Observatories in Latin America
The Gender Observatories are a channel for monitoring and tracking public policy, anticipating Emerging social developments, and gaining empirical evidence, based on official data, regarding the Status of women, and their inequalities in relation to men. Most observatories respond to the need for more and better evidence of achievements and advances, the ability to identify challenges and generate appropriate responses, and tools that Governments could use to provide timely response to emerging trends and phenomena.
As a follow up to the Gender Plan of Action for implementing the Gender Equality Policy, in 2009, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) prepared a mapping of 34 observatories in the Region. This document analyzed the roles, achievements and, in particular, the relationship between the observatories and health authorities. At the end of 2009, PAHO facilitated the first meeting of eight observatories already established and operative. Besides helping define and strengthen mutual collaboration, the meeting allowed to advance and monitor the integration of a gender equality perspective in the policies, programs and health monitoring systems in participant countries.
