Strengthening Health Information Systems

Regional Initiative for Strengthening Health Information Systems in Latin America and the Caribbean: 2005-2010

In recent years, following recommendations from the Regional Advisory Committee on Health Statistics (CRAES), PAHO as the WHO regional technical health organization of the United Nations in the Americas has led an initiative to develop and maintain a regional plan to strengthen HIS and has joined the other above-mentioned initiatives, with the purpose of assisting countries in the production of improved statistics.

The Regional Plan for the Strengthening Vital and Health Statistics in the countries of the Americas (PEVS as its acronyms in Spanish) draws on the experience of the United Nations Statistics Division; incorporates the conceptual framework of the Health Metrics Network (HMN) and the dynamics of the relationships between determining factors and their impact as outlined in the Performance of Routine Information System Management (PRISM) Framework; and adopts its own vision regarding information production processes.

Since 2004 PAHO and MEASURE Evaluation have executed a joint technical cooperation project, under the framework of the PAHO/USAID-LAC Bureau umbrella project, oriented toward strengthening HIS in selected countries in the Americas Region using the HMN and PRISM models.

This joint project has enhanced the potential that they had the individual initiatives which he makes: that of the OPS, the RMS, the SIRS, through its Project Health Analysis and Information (HSD / HA, Area Health Surveillance and Disease Prevention and Control Project, Health Information and Analysis, Health Surveillance and Disease Prevention and Control / Health Information and Analysis for its acronym in English).

The primary objectives of this joint effort have been to use and promote standardized frameworks, methodologies, and instruments to monitor HIS operations; to identify, document, and disseminate successful experiences, key processes, and lessons learned relating to assessment processes; and to design strategic plans to strengthen HIS in selected countries.

This webpage includes conceptual and technical documents, country reports, strategic plans and further information from the regional initiative.
