Mission of the PAHO Regional Program: Support PAHO Member States in the surveillance, prevention, control, and eradication of zoonotic diseases (i.e. diseases transmitted by animals) and animal attacks.
Areas of Work
- Elimination of human rabies transmitted by dogs.
Promotion of intersectoral and interprogrammatic activities in the areas of surveillance, prevention, and control of zoonoses and animal attacks in neglected populations.
- Surveillance and preparedness in the face of emerging and reemerging zoonoses such as zoonotic avian influenza, swine flu (H1N1), bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE, commonly called "mad cow disease"), and West Nile Virus (WNV).
- Conservation of neotropical primates; biomedical models for human diseases and vaccines.
