Rotavirus surveillance

Surveillance is the collection, collation, analysis and interpretation of data for public health action.

Sentinel surveillance is surveillance based at designated institutions or sites, which have been selected for their geographic location, medical specialty, or ability to accurately diagnose and report high-quality data. Rotavirus hospital-based surveillance began in the Americas in April 2006 with seven countries reporting data to PAHO. In 2009, thirteen countries and one territory reported data to PAHO: Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay,  St Vincente, Surinam and Venezuela.
