Chagas Disease

The fight against Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) in the Americas:

Fighting poverty, preventing and treating disease, avoiding disability, improving housing, educating communities, improving blood screening and preventing transfusional transmission.

The following fact sheet describes the work of the PAHO Chagas team, whose mission is to carry out technical-cooperation activities in countries where this disease is endemic:

• Interrupt household vectoral transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi through integrated control schemes, with their objectives adjusted to the epidemiological reality of each country or subregion.
• Contribute to the interruption of trasfusional transmission of T. cruzi.
• Provide support to any efficacious advancements proposed by the countries in the areas of diagnostics, management, and surveillance of Chagas disease. 

The team accomplishes the above through subregional integration schemes covering four endemic geographic spaces with the respective subregional initiatives as described below.
