Drug Resistance Could Set Back Malaria Successes

Father and daughter in a malaria-prone regionThe World Health Organization (WHO) announced today that the emergence of artemisinin resistant parasites at the Thai-Cambodia border could seriously undermine global malaria control efforts achieved. Surveillance systems and research studies are providing new evidence that parasites resistant to artemisinin have emerged.

Costa Rica called a leader in traffic safety

The regular use of safety belts in this Central American country has risen from 24% to 82% of all drivers. Press reports reveal that stops of impaired motorists in January 2009 fell 54% in comparison with the number of stops registered in January of 2008, under an old traffic code.
