World TB Day, 24 March 2012:
"Stop TB in my lifetime"

Introduction

World TB Day is recognized on March 24th, commemorating the announcement of a discovery by Dr. Robert Koch in 1882: the finding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that cause TB. Since then, major advances have been made in the fight against this disease. Now we have the technology to diagnose it and the drugs to treat it. However, it still produces pain and death.

In 2010 in the Americas, 270,000 people suffered from this disease and 23,000 died; furthermore, nearly 9 million people suffered from TB worldwide and 1.4 million died, showing that the fight against TB has still not been won. This year we commemorate World TB Day by calling upon people of all ages, occupations and nationalities so that, together, we make efforts to stop tuberculosis in our lifetime. In messages for this occasion the Director of PAHO and the UN Secretary-General call on us to multiply efforts and reaffirm the commitment of fight against this disease.

From Control to Elimination

For "World TB Day 2011" we will be in the second year of the biennial campaign "Innovate and accelerate efforts against tuberculosis”, whose goal is to inspire innovation in research and care of tuberculosis.

PAHO / WHO joins the global campaign and continues with the three official posters for the Region. The goal of World TB Day is to raise awareness of this disease in order to prevent and control it and thus provide a path for its elimination. According to the Global Plan to Stop TB 2011-2015, there is a strong commitment to developing rapid tuberculosis tests, shorter treatment regimens, and a fully effective vaccine to be placed on the market, thereby helping to shift from control to elimination.
