On 14 June 2012, World Blood Donor Day will be marked with events around the world to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank all voluntary unpaid donors for their life-saving gift of blood. The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign, “Every blood donor is a hero” focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood. While recognizing the silent and unsung heroes who save lives every day through their blood donations, the theme also strongly encourages more people all over the world to donate blood voluntarily and regularly.
In this webpage, we present promotional material and additional resources.
One of the missions of the Health Technologies for Quality of Care team of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is to cooperate technically with national blood programs in the Region of the Americas to ensure that they have sufficient quantities of safe blood to provide timely transfusions to all patients who need them, thus contributing to lower mortality and optimal patient care in Latin America and the Caribbean.
World Blood Donor Day was established by the World Health Assembly in 2004. Its purpose is to recognize individuals who voluntarily and altruistically donate blood, and to contribute to strengthening national programs for collecting, processing and distributing sufficient safe blood for all patients who require transfusions.
This June 14th, 2011, the annual global ceremony to commemorate World Blood Donor Day will be held in
