International Aids Conference 2012

PAHO’s activities during the International AIDS Conference 2012

The International AIDS Conference is the largest AIDS-related meeting in the world during which representatives of civil society organizations, academics, policy-makers, researchers, health care practitioners and many other relevant stakeholders get together to review the most recent findings and developments in the field of the HIV epidemics. This year of 2012 the conference will be held in Washington, DC from July 22nd to 27th. The Pan American Health Organization has planned several activities within the framework of the Conference. Some of them are independent affiliate events just before the opening of the Conference and others are satellite sessions during the days of the event. On Saturday July 21st two events will be held at PAHO Headquarters and they are open to every person interested in the topics that will be addressed during those two independent events. The first event is a working session on HIV and viral hepatitis (VH) co-infection (in collaboration with the Canadian Society for International Health). This session will address clinical and public health issues of this condition. Audience participation will be promoted in order to define strategies to strengthen responses to reduce the excessive burden represented caused by HIV-VH co-infection. The second (simultaneous) event is aimed at sharing innovative HIV care programs in Latin America and the Caribbean and highlighting best practices. Both sessions will take place at PAHO Headquarters at 525, 23rd Street NW in Rooms B and C respectively. Admission is free. A third affiliate event is being jointly organized with the Human Rights Campaign and the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC). The title of this independent affiliate event is “Addressing Stigma in Transgender and other HIV-Vulnerable Communities” and it will be held at 1640 Rhode Island Avenue NW, Washington DC. Admission is free but a RSVP’s at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it is strongly recommended.

In regards to the satellite sessions, PAHO is co-organizing three of them. Participation is restricted to the Registered Conference Delegates. On Sunday July 22nd from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm a session with the title: The Great TRANSformation: Towards a Holistic Approach for Healthier and Happier Trans Communities in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held at Session Room 7 of the Convention Center. On Monday July 23rd a session called “Optimizing and Scaling up Treatment in Latin America and the Caribbean: Towards a new generation of treatment programs” will take place from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Session Room 9 of the venue of the conference. The third satellite session, on Thursday July 26th, is called “Addressing Sexual Health and Evidence-based Sexual Health Education: Evolving Opportunities” will take place at Session Room 9 and will take place from 7:00 am to 8:30 am.
