Incorporating a Gender Perspective in the Work with Indigenous Peoples

This document was presented in the 15th Meeting of the Special Subcommittee on Women, Health, and Development -- Washington, D.C., 3-4 April 1995

The following document refers to PAHO's initiative to promote the health of indigenous peoples of the Americas (SAPIA) and offers some insights as to how a gender approach might be incorporated into health policies and programs that seek the participation of indigenous populations, not just as passive beneficiaries of outside actions, but as catalysts and shapers of their own health maintenance and care.

Working to Achieve Health Equity with an Ethnic
Perspective: What has been Done and Best Practices

This document will address issues relating to health equity and victims of racial discrimination. As in previous PAHO contributions to the HCHR working groups, the documents focus on the collection and analysis of health data disaggregated by racial/ethnic origins.

Cultural diversity and disaggregation of statistical health information

This paper explores the specific determinants of indigenous women’s health status and situation from a gender roles and relations perspective. It will begin by examining the social status and health determinants of indigenous women throughout the Americas, using available data and examples from seven countries (Canada,Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and the United States). The paper will continue with a look at health outcomes among indigenous women, identifying the major causes of morbidity and mortality for selected communities.

Finally, the paper outlines the challenges and opportunities for addressing indigenous women’s health and gender equity in the Americas, using specific case studies and existing best practices to support a comprehensive set of recommendations.
