Following the recommendations of expert and country consultation of January 2009 to form a task force for the reduction of dietary salt consumption, PAHO convened a group of scientific and technical experts to start the process of strengthening capacity in the Region to implement population-wide salt reduction policies. The main objective of the Expert Group (EG) is to explore the different aspects of dietary salt reduction to prevent cardiovascular disease to the extent of its practicality. Since then, the EG and Secretariat have attended several meetings and events, whose reports are available here.

PAHO/WHO Regional Expert Group on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention through
Dietary Salt Reduction has produced this policy statement. It has the rationale
and recommendations for a population-based approach to reduce dietary salt
