HUNDREDS of Bahamians took part in a "wellness revolution" on the grounds of the Ministry of Health's complex at the juncture of Augusta, Delancy and Meeting Streets last Saturday. The activities were part of a Mega Health Extravaganza, to observe Caribbean Wellness Day- a day marked by Caricom Heads of Government in 2007. The event was planned in response to a recognised need for definitive action in the fight against chronic diseases, under the theme "Love My Body."

NASSAU, The Bahamas - The Bahamas joined the rest of the Caribbean on Saturday, September 12 in celebrating Caribbean Wellness Day under the theme: “Love My Body”. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Brent Symonette officially opened a wellness fair at the Ministry of Health, encouraging Bahamians to curb the rate of non-communicable diseases through healthy living.

Passers by made a double take as two sets of breasts (yes breasts!) were on public display in front of National Bank, Charlestown. However, before you think it was a case of indecent exposure, rest assured that the breasts in question were rubber, self examination breast models being used as a part of Pink Lily’s educational prevention programme. Montserrat will be celebrating Caribbean Wellness Day along with their regional counter parts this Saturday 12th 2009. Non Communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes are theleading causes of illness and premature death in the Caribbean today. In addition most of these diseases are caused by modifiable risk factors including tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and alcohol abuse. Other risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar , most of which can be controlled or prevented ,can also contribute to these illnesses.
