Mission
Catalyze and lead intra and inter-sectoral initiatives aimed at strengthening Member States' capacity to promote and protect health through public policies that will transform social and environmental determinants and will help reduce inequities and risks in order to improve the physical, mental, and social well being of the population within a framework of sustainable development.
Functional Statements
1.) Develops and implements technical
cooperation programs on sustainable development and health, focusing on the
social and environmental determinants of health with an inter-sectoral approach.
2.) Promotes guidelines, standards
and best practices on environmental health, occupational health, water and
sanitation, health promotion, social determinants of health, mental health,
violence prevention, road safety, tobacco control, alcohol control, substance
abuse, healthy diet and physical activity.
3.) Establishes and promotes
inter-programmatic and intersectoral work with networks such as WHO CC and other
key stakeholders, to address topics related to SDE.
4.) Develop and disseminate
methodologies on health risk assessment, health impact assessment, equity and
risk factors´ control for health systems based on primary health care.
5.) The Area of Sustainable
Development and Environmental Health consists of three technical projects:
Health Promotion and Determinants of Health (HP), Mental Health and Substance
Abuse (MH), and Environmental and Occupational Health (EH), which includes the
Regional Team on Water and Sanitation (ETRAS).
