PAHO, CDC publish guide on preparing for chikungunya virus introduction in the Americas

The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has published new guidelines on chikungunya, a mosquito-transmitted virus transmitted that causes fever and severe joint pain.

Haiti Quake Efforts Were Hampered by Poor Information Sharing

The massive humanitarian response that followed Haiti’s January 2010 earthquake was less effective than it could have been due to poor coordination and information sharing and widespread disregard among international groups for the authority of the Haitian government, according to a new report from the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).

PAHO Report Urges Higher Tobacco Taxes, Bans on Advertising

A growing number of countries in the Americas are adopting effective measures to reduce consumption of tobacco and exposure to secondhand smoke. But a new report from the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) recommends further measures, particularly increases in tobacco taxes and bans on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.

Experts Call for Major Investments in Water and Sanitation to End Cholera in Haiti and the Dominican Republic

The presidents of Haiti and the Dominican Republic joined the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on January 11th, in calling for major international investments in water and sanitation infrastructure to eliminate cholera from the island of Hispaniola.
