The Pan American Health Organization Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief Coordination unit, through Applied Research Associates, has developed new state-of-the-art wind hazard maps for Caribbean islands and nearby coastal areas of Central and South America. The Hospital Safety Index gathers general information for each facility on variables such as: level of complexity, population served, specialties, health staff, available services, location, hazards, and the history of disasters at the site. An assessment is then made of the level of safety of the structural and nonstructural components and functional and organizational aspects of the hospital.(17/Dec/2007)
