- Breaking news: Two cases of wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) have been reported from West Africa - one from Mali (in Mopti province) with onset of paralysis on 8 February and the other from Cote d'Ivoire (in Bas Sassandra province), with onset of paralysis on 27 January. This is the first WPV3 in
Côte d'Ivoire since current record-keeping;
Mali's most recent WPV3 was in September 2010. These cases have just been reported and are not yet reflected in the official global data.

Gabon reports first polio case in 10 years
Gabon has reported its first case of polio in more than ten years, a WPV1 with date of onset 15 January 2011. This serves as a reminder that even polio-free countries are not safe from the virus until the disease is completely eradicated. Genetic sequencing is under way to determine the origin of the virus. |
