It has been 12 months since Asia reported its last case due to wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3). The last case on the continent occurred on 18 April 2012 in Khyber Agency, Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), Pakistan. Globally, WPV3 transmission is at its lowest levels ever recorded. Over the past six months, only one case due to this strain was reported worldwide (from Yobe, Nigeria, with onset of paralysis on 10 November 2012).

• In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), all samples from 2012 AFP cases have now been fully cleared, and confirm that the country has not reported a WPV case in over one year (the last reported WPV case had onset of paralysis on 20 December 2011). The country is no longer considered to be affected by re-established WPV transmission (DR Congo had been affected by re-established transmission since 2006).
  

• With Angola successfully coming off the re-established transmission list in July 2012, South Sudan in 2010 and now DR Congo, Chad remains the only country with re-established WPV transmission. Although the country is on track to becoming again polio-free in June 2013 (most recent WPV case: 14 June 2012), Chad remains affected by a cVDPV2 outbreak.

•    In Somalia, a new circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) (onset of paralysis on 9 January 2013) was reported.  
•    This latest case is linked to a cVDPV2 outbreak ongoing in south-central Somalia since 2011 – nine cases were reported in 2011 and one case in 2012 (July).  
•    In 2012, this outbreak spread across the border to Kenya, with three cases reported from Dadaab, in North Eastern Province between April and June 2012.  
•    In late 2012 and January 2013, access to populations is being achieved for the first time in three years in key areas of south-central Somalia, as a result of concerted local-access negotiations.
•    An emergency action plan for south-central Somalia has been developed and is being implemented.  At the same time, efforts are on-going to further boost population immunity levels in accessible, polio-free areas of Somalia, as well as in border areas of Kenya.
•    However, confirmation of this most recent case underscores that the outbreak is ongoing and more outbreak response must be implemented
