- Cancer is a leading cause of death in the Americas. In 2008, cancer accounted for 1.2 million deaths, 45% of which occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- The number of cancer deaths in the Americas is projected to increase from 1.2 million to 2.1 million between 2008 and 2030.
- About a third of all cancer cases could be prevented by avoiding key risk factors. These include tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.
- Vaccination and screening programmes are effective interventions to reduce the burden of specific types of cancer.
- Many cancers have a high chance of cure if detected early and treated adequately.

The burden of breast cancer, as well as the management and organization of breast cancer (BC) care in 18 countries [Brazil, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the Russian Federation, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the UK] was presented recently in a global report titled “A Review of Breast Cancer Care and Outcomes in 18 Countries in Europe, Asia and Latin-America”
- WCRF/AICR. The Associations between Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity and the Risk of Breast Cancer, 2008
The report reviews the results of cohort studies and controlled trials on diet, nutrition, physical activity and breast cancer published from Jan 2006 till Dec 2007. The number of reports included is 100, from which 1 is a randomised controlled trial, 74 are reports based on prospective cohort designs, 4 are historical cohorts, 1 report has a case cohort design, and 21 are case-control studies nested in cohorts.
- WCRF. Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective, 2007
The proposals that cancer might be preventable, and that food, nutrition, physical activity, and body composition might affect the risk of cancer, were first made before science emerged in its modern form in the 19th and 20th centuries.

National health authorities and key opinion leaders from nine countries in Latin America [Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Peru] gathered together to discuss their experiences and needs to scale up access to cervical cancer and breast cancer prevention and early detection strategies, using new technologies and approaches.
Cada año se presentan cerca de 80.000 nuevos casos y 35.000 muertes por cáncer cervicouterino en las Américas. 
Cada año se producen más de 85.000 nuevos casos de cáncer de estómago y 75.000 muertes por éste tipo de cáncer en las Américas. 
Con más de 300.000 nuevos casos y más de 75.000 muertes, el cáncer de próstata es el primer cáncer en las Américas en cuanto a casos nuevos y el segundo en cuanto a muertes por cáncer en hombres. 
Cada año se producen más de 240.000 nuevos casos y 95.000 muertes por cáncer colorectal en las Américas. 
Con más de 300.000 nuevos casos y más de 80.000 muertes, el cáncer de mama es el primer cáncer en las Américas en cuanto a casos nuevos y el segundo en cuanto a muertes por cáncer en mujeres.
