Second Meeting of the Expert Group: Reviewing Advances and Planning a Second Phase

The second meeting of The Expert Group -- Reviewing Advances and Planning a Second Phase -- took place in Washington, DC the 27-28th of October 2011. Two years prior, in September 2009, PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses Periago launched the regional initiative - CVD Prevention through Dietary Salt Reduction - by convening an Expert Group (EG) with a 24-month mandate. Now, as the EG has concluded its first phase of work and submits its final report, it turns to its collective expertise and experience toward developing a plan for a second phase of activity.

The objectives of the second meeting were to:

(1) take stock of the advances and challenges,

(2) discuss lessons learned and critical issues, and

(3) move forward through defining opportunities and plan to further advance dietary salt reduction in the Region for 2012-2014.

World Economic Forum on Latin America

The World Economic Forum on Latin America brought together representatives of public health authorities, the commercial food industry and civil society for a private session on Creating Healthier Environments and Lifestyles. The meeting was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 27 April 2011. The collaboration between the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Economic Forum aims, among other things, to catalyze advances in two specific areas: healthy workplaces, as a common denominator for all employers across industries, geographies and sectors; and sodium/salt reduction in processed foods, requiring collaboration between governments, regulatory agencies, civil society and private sector companies engaged in food processing.
