One of the missions of the Medicines and Health Technologies project, especifically the area of Blood Services in the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is to cooperate technically with national blood programs in the Region of the Americas to ensure that they have sufficient quantities of safe blood to provide timely transfusions to all patients who need them.

14 June 2012 World Blood Donor Day was marked with events around the world to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank all voluntary unpaid donors for their life-saving gift of blood. The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign was “Every blood donor is a hero”.
