Washington, D.C., 16 January 2013 (PAHO/WHO) — During the last decade there were great strides in the fight against neglected infectious diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean, such as Chagas disease, leprosy and onchocerciasis (river blindness), but the sustained commitment of the governments of the region and other institutions and partners is still necessary to control and eliminate this group of diseases that mostly affect people living in poverty, said experts from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), as part of the launch of the second Global Report on Neglected Tropical Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO).
