Influenza activity increases in North America

In light of increased influenza activity in North America, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization is recommending that all Member States that might face increased circulation of influenza viruses take measures to ensure proper clinical management of patients, implement prevention and control measures, and prepare their health services for a potential influx of patients. PAHO/WHO does not recommend travel restrictions, including screening at points of entry.

Increased circulation of influenza in North America has been reported since the final weeks of 2012 and into 2013. In the United States, this increase has occurred earlier than usual, based on historical data.

Earlier occurrence of influenza activity can result in increased hospital admissions, outbreaks in healthcare facilities, and an increase in antiviral prescriptions, as well as increased outpatient visits.
