Internet Day, celebrated on 17 May, is intended to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.*

In recent years, social networks have become instrumental tools in the implementation of public health initiatives. The rise and development of real-time technology have allowed for improved modes of communication and instant feedback, and enhanced the conversation among social actors, health professionals and the general public. Social networks provide an interactive platform to exchange information and share knowledge, improving a sense of awareness and understanding among individuals and groups. As most ICTs, these tools enable people to overcome the barriers of time and space, in many cases, giving a voice to dispersed and disadvantaged populations.

​To promote the integration of social networks into public health initiatives, the Pan American Health Organization is celebrating this day with activities for their staff.
