January 13, 2012 :: Health Promoters and Community Leaders

In a Cite Soleil camp for displaced people in Haiti, health promoters along with community leaders distribute educational material on cholera prevention. Hygiene education and health promotion are relatively low cost and have been important elements in the response. Messages have gotten through and have been well internalized.

Investment in infrastructure is a must, but it will take considerable time to attain adequate coverage. CDC, PAHO and UNICEF as well as the governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, recognize that pledges of aid have been made for reconstruction, but call to action today for a cholera-free Hispaniola. “We can make a difference by joining efforts to save more lives and reduce disease. Let’s take the first step together today,” said the director of the Organization, Dr. Mirta Roses Periago.
