El Paso, TX, December 7, 2011 (PAHO/WHO) – Cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases are common issues on the U.S.-Mexico border region that is why the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is hosting a forum and workshop to establish the Non-Communicable Diseases U.S.-Mexico Border Technical Advisory Group (TAG). The three-day forum and workshop is taking place from 7th to Friday 9th December, 2011.El Paso, TX. The three-day forum and workshop is taking place from 7th to Friday 9th December, 2011.El Paso, TX.
Furthermore, the TAG will discuss general aspects of the process of sanitation policies informed by evidence, develop a common understanding of a “policy briefing,” the need of it and how to use it. In addition, it will develop the capacity among researchers and decision makers along the U.S.-Mexico border. The TAG will be comprised of participants from various institutions from Mexico and the United States, it will be supported by facilitators such as Dr. Evelina Chapman, from PAHO/WHO, Dr. Juan Manuel Lozano, from the International University of Florida, and Dr. Marcelo García Diéguez from Medical Association Hospital Bahia Blanca. “The training subject is very important, but it has to be a continuing and consistent process, we need to train and strengthen staff, create a data base, and advocate for public policies and environmental changes.” Said Dr. Maria Teresa Cerqueira, Chief from the PAHO/WHO U.S.-Mexico Border Office. The TAG will be tasked with the responsibility to identify health issues, acquire, assess, and adapt scientific evidence in order to facilitate the development of public policies to generate changes on the settings where people live, work, study, and play.
