Social Determinants of Health Debated in Costa Rica

According to WHO, most of the global burden of disease and the causes of health inequities arise from the conditions in which people are born, live, work and age. Costa Rica was chosen to host the Regional Consultation on Social Determinants of Health, organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). The activity took place August 8 and 9, 2011. The consultation brought together about 60 senior officials from the governments of the Region of the Americas, as well as representatives of international organizations and high-level experts in the field, including Sir Michael Marmot, head of the WHO Commission Social Determinants of Health and Dr. Socorro Gross-Galiano, Assistant Director of PAHO.
