Every year, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) calls on families, friends, neighbors, and even pets to participate in the PAHO Walk for Health to raise awareness of the World Health Day theme. On 2 April 2011, people marched at the National Mall, Washington, D.C., to join the join the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance. The activity brought together people of all ages for a fun-packed day with music, snacks, face-painting, give-aways, and much more.
The banner for World Health Day 2011 emphasizes the importance of Antimicrobial Resistance, an obstacle in the control of communicable diseases, including infection by HIV, malaria and tuberculosis.
Under the slogan Combat Drug Resistance: No action today, No cure tomorrow, PAHO/WHO will increase awareness of antimicrobial resistance and will work to promote the development and implementation of policies that will allow for its containment.
