Internships will contribute to the Research Promotion Program’s mission
Internship opportunities at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in the Research Promotion and Development program, beginning in the Summer of 2010.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) enjoys international recognition as part of the United Nations system, serving as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization, and as the health agency of the Inter-American System. PAHO is based in Washington, D.C., and has scientific and technical experts at its headquarters, in every country in the Americas, and in its eight specialized centers.
PAHO Member States include all 35 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and its Ministers of Health set the Organization's technical and administrative policies through its Governing Bodies. PAHO works with the governments of these countries to address priority health issues. In this endeavor, PAHO works with health authorities as well as with many other important stakeholders, such as NGOs, public health workers, researchers, university professors, and other members of civil society.
Communications Internship
Duration 8-12 weeks - 30 to 35 hours per week
We seek an intern to contribute to the Research Program’s communications strategy including transforming the research site (www.paho.org/researchportal) into a useful and dynamic portal, adding videos and as making it more of a WEB 2.0 type. As a communications intern you would be working on the following projects:
· Work in the design and implementation of the communications strategy by: a) Writing case studies that illustrate the value of research
b) Contributing to the Research Bulletin
c) Participating in research events by crafting the agenda and organizing the Research Interest brown bag lunch
· Update the website by: writing and reviewing copy for the web, uploading text, images, videos, podcasts.
· Develop methods for obtaining systematical feedback on the PAHO Research Portal
· Other duties as assigned
Although there is no monetary compensation for this internship, interns will gain valuable work experience as part of an international team that promotes research for health in the Americas and will have the opportunity to utilize and hone their Spanish language skills.
Please note that activities will not be limited to the above
projects; interns may be invited to participate in other activities relevant to
the production and use of research evidence for public health, monitoring and
evaluation, and continuous improvement of the capacities and processes for the
use of research evidence in the Organization and its
Requirements: understanding of and interest in research, good writing and analytical skills, and some work experience with web tools. Bear in mind that you are likely to be required to communicate fluently in Spanish or English (ideally with working knowledge of the other). Fluent communication in French or Portuguese is an asset.
