The James Lind Library collects historic cases related to clinical trials and has developed fantastic resources to explain the importance and elements of well conducted research. They have compiled a multitude of essays demonstrating the importance of the fair test of treatments in health care and shows how these ideas have evolved over time.

Through PAHO's partnership with the James Lind Library, there has been the successful translation of key essays into the languages of the region; Spanish, French, and Portuguese.  These documents are readily available to PAHO's expansive network of researchers to guide different research initiatives and promote best practices.

  • Testing treatment, second edition: published by the James Lind Library, this book is for anyone concerned about his/her or a family member's health, or the politics of health. The new edition includes chapters that show how screening for disease can sometimes do more harm that good and how over-regulation of research can work against the best interest of patients. A new Chapter that illustrate how robust evidence from research can be drawn together to shape the practice of health care in ways that allow treatment decisions to be reached jointly by patients and clinicians. PAHO will publish the book in Spanish and Portuguese.
