The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) today called on the international community to provide financing for a new $2.2 billion plan from the Haitian government to eliminate cholera transmission over the next 10 years through major investments in water and sanitation. The new National Plan for the Elimination of Cholera in Haiti provides a blueprint for increased investments in water and sanitation infrastructure, water-quality monitoring systems and water and sanitation management. It also includes health measures for prevention, surveillance, and case management; interventions for community-based behavior change; and vaccination for targeted groups against cholera. In her first official visit as director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dr. Carissa F. Etienne met with the foundation’s president, Dr. Paulo Gadelha;
Accompanied by PAHO/WHO’s representative in Brazil, Dr. Joaquin Molina, and the director of the Latin American and Caribbean Center for Health Sciences Information (BIREME), Alalberto Tardelli, Dr. Etienne visited the BioManguinhos scientific-technical center, Fiocruz’s Final Processing Center, and the future site of the Integrated Center for Biopharmaceutical Prototypes for Diagnostic Reagents (CIPBR).
At BioManguinhos, Dr. Etienne attended a briefing on the Fiocruz Foundation along with members of its Board of Directors. She also met with Dr. José Temporao, director of the South American Institute of Government in Health (ISAGS) and former minister of health of Brazil.
PAHO seeks to prevent breast and cervical cancer, which claim some 120,000 lives each year in the Americas
Representatives of different sectors will develop action plan to reduce cancers that affect some 400,000 women annually in the region
Washington, D.C., 4 February 2013 (PAHO/WHO) — With the goal of reducing deaths from breast and cervical cancer in the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) this week is bringing together representatives of governments, international organizations, academic institutions, civil society, and the private sector to develop a plan of action for screening, early diagnosis, education and treatment for these cancers and for expanded vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV).
Dr. Carissa F. Etienne took office today as the new Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), pledging to work in close partnership with PAHO member countries to extend the benefits of health progress to all people in the Americas. Dr. Etienne’s highest priority will be accelerating progress toward universal access to quality health care.

Three government-supported anti-malaria programs from Paraguay, Brazil, and Ecuador were named Malaria Champions of the Americas this week for their success in reducing the burden of malaria through improved diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance. The top Malaria Champion of the Americas award went to the National Malaria Control Program of Paraguay, which has reduced the burden of malaria by focusing on the elimination of local transmission and the use of a systematic model for testing, treating, and tracking malaria cases that emphasizes community volunteers, strategic supervision, support of personnel, assurance of quality services, and effective use of local resources. Active Cities: Transforming Communities for Smart Growth and Health
To celebrate Wellness Week, following a tradition of 15 years, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) held this September 23 the Health Walk, from its headquarters in Washington, DC.
Volunteers, walkers, runners and cyclists from PAHO and other organizations in the city, gathered at the headquarters to initiate the route that would end at Fiesta DC, where they distributed information on Wellness Week.
Dr. Carissa Etienne, a native of Dominica, will be the new Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). She was elected by PAHO Member States during the 28th Pan American Sanitary Conference.

Aging in the Americas
By 2020 the Americas will have 200 million older people, almost double that of 2006 and with more than half living in Latin America and the Caribbean. The increase in life expectancy and consequent growth in the older population has brought about a health transition characterized by a rise in non-communicable disease and disability and a wider demand for healthcare.
The next 40 years, when population trends will tend to lean with economic growth, is a window of opportunity to prepare for the aging population.

Viral hepatitis is a main contributor to severe illness and death worldwide, constituting a major public health problem. It is a hidden disease affecting the Americas. Some preventive measures, such as hepatitis A and B vaccination or screening of donated blood, have been implemented in the Region. However, many asymptomatic people still carry the virus without knowing, raising the possibility of transmission. Moreover, diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis remain a challenge in the Region. PAHO has led the development of a regional strategy and action plan to reduce the burden of viral hepatitis infection and disease in the Americas by improving surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and control. To mark this achievement, PAHO will held the commemoration of World Hepatitis Day with the participation of Jon Secada, singer-songwriter and a PAHO Champion of Health, whose commitment in the fight against viral hepatitis in the Americas was be recognized.

On January 11 of this year, the presidents of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, together with representatives of PAHO/WHO, UNICEF, and the CDC, issued a call to action to eliminate cholera from both countries through new investments in water and sanitation infrastructure. The next step was the formation of the new Regional Coalition on Water and Sanitation for the Elimination of Cholera in the Island of Hispaniola, which was officially presented on June 4 during the 33rd Congress of the Inter-American Association of Environmental Health Engineers (AIDIS). The coalition will bring together the necessary technical expertise, raise new funds, and mobilize previously committed pledges.

First Pan American Forum for Action on NCDS (PAFNCDS) Meeting
Health authorities from throughout the Americas are gathering with representatives of civil society, academia and the private sector in Brazil this week for the first meeting of the Pan American Forum for Action on Non-communicable Diseases: “Transforming NCD Declarations into Actions.”
Participants will discuss joint efforts to address the epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are responsible for 80 percent of all deaths in the Americas. The Pan American Forum is a platform for information exchange and collaborative action involving all sectors of society. It seeks to create synergies in the development of innovative strategic partnerships to intensify cross-sector collaboration and generate policies and campaigns for prevention and control of NCDs.
CARMEN meeting, health experts discuss action on non-communicable diseases
Brasilia, 7 May 2012 — Health authorities, academicians, and civil society representatives from throughout the Americas are gathered in Brasilia this week for a meeting of the CARMEN network, with the aim of exchanging experiences and discussing joint action to fight non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Region.
Participants include managers of non-communicable disease programs from 36 countries as well as representatives of 15 collaborating institutions in academia and civil society. Discussions will focus on how to translate the Declaration of the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (held in September 2011) into policies, programs and concrete actions.

Semana Vacunación de las Americas, Puerto Barrios, Izabal
Honduras lanzó este 25 de abril su Semana de Vacunación con el Secretario de Salud, doctor Arturo Bendaña, acompañado por la doctora Socorro Gross, Subdirectora de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud y por Bill Gates (padre), en representación de la Fundación Bill y Melinda Gates. Este evento se realizó en el marco de la décima Semana de Vacunación en las Américas y la primera Semana Mundial de la Inmunización. La Semana de Vacunación en las Américas es la iniciativa de salud multinacional más grande de la región que este año también se ha convertido en una iniciativa global con la celebración de la primera Semana Mundial de la Inmunización en la que participan más de 180 países. El acto se realizó en la Plaza Central Francisco Morazán, también participó la representante de la OPS/OMS en Honduras, doctora Gina Watson. En el evento se inauguró la jornada nacional de vacunación y la campaña de seguimiento contra el sarampión y la rubéola y la aplicación simbólica de vacunas.
El décimo aniversario de la Semana de Vacunación (SVA) fue lanzado el 19 de abril en la República Dominicana, con la participación de Ministro de Salud, el doctor Bautista Rojas Gómez, la Dra. Lilian Reneau-Vernon, Representante en el país y otras autoridades. Durante la SVA 2012 el país está vacunando a niños menores de tres años de edad contra la poliomielitis, así como a las personas que trabajan en la industria del turismo y a los migrantes contra el sarampión y la rubéola.
The tenth anniversary of Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) will be celebrated from 21-28 April 2012.
VWA is an extraordinary effort led by the countries and territories of the Region to advance equity and access to vaccination. VWA activities strengthen the national immunization programs in the Americas by reaching out to populations with little access to regular health services, such as those populations living in urban fringes, rural and border areas and in indigenous communities. Since its inception in 2003, more than 365 million individuals of all ages have been vaccinated during campaigns conducted under the framework of VWA. Other regions of the World Health Organization (WHO) have also established their own successful Vaccination/Immunization Week initiatives and 2012 will mark the first celebration of World Immunization Week (WIW) which will serve as an over-arching framework to unite all global efforts.
Haiti today launched intensive vaccination activities to protect children against diseases including polio, measles and rubella, among others. A launch event was held in Port of Prince with the participation of national health authorities, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the GAVI Alliance, and other international organizations. “Today Haiti marks three important milestones in global public health: the launch of intensive activities for child health, the 10th anniversary of Vaccination Week in the Americas, and the first World Immunization Week,” said PAHO Director Mirta Roses Periago, at a special event held at Port of Prince City Hall. Ten years ago, in 2003, Haiti was the site of the first launch of Vaccination Week in the Americas. Since then, the regional initiative has taken the benefits of vaccination to an estimated 365 million people throughout the hemisphere.

Over the past century life expectancy has increased dramatically and the world will soon have more older people than children. Ageing populations occur everywhere, but less-developed countries are witnessing the fastest change. This social transformation represents both challenges and opportunities. In particular, countries may only have a single generation to prepare their health and social systems for an ageing world. /
Durante el siglo pasado, la esperanza de vida aumentó tan acusadamente que en el mundo pronto se contarán más personas de edad que niños. El envejecimiento de la población se registra por doquier, pero es en los países menos adelantados donde se percibe un cambio más rápido. Esa transformación social presenta a la vez problemas y oportunidades. En particular, en algunos países se dispondrá solo del lapso de una generación para preparar los sistemas de salud y de seguridad social para un mundo que envejece.
Tuberculosis (TB) infects about a third of the world's population. It kills more adults each year than AIDS, diarrhea, malaria, and other tropical diseases combined. TB can be transmitted in the air. TB remains the second-leading infectious disease killer in the Americas (after HIV/AIDS) despite significant progress in controlling the disease. Currently an estimated 23,000 people die each year from TB in the Americas, and 270,000—including 44,000 children—become sick with the disease. But these numbers reflect major progress in recent decades. Since 1990, TB cases have declined by 60 percent in the region, and TB deaths have declined by two-thirds. “It is my aspiration that one day in the not-too-distant future, we will see an America free of tuberculosis,” said PAHO Director Dr. Roses in a message marking World TB Day. “This goal can only be met with commitment from everyone.” Photos: © PAHO/WHO
A cholera epidemic in the 1990s killed some 12,000 people in 21 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It was brought under control after eight years of international public health efforts that included massive investments in water and sanitation infrastructure. Neglected ('forgotten') diseases are a set of infectious diseases, many of them parasitic, that primarily affect the most vulnerable populations: the poorest of the poor, the most marginalized, and those with the least access to health services—especially impoverished people living in remote rural areas and urban shantytowns. Dealing with these poverty-related diseases calls for a more integrated and multi-disease approach, one requiring multisectoral action, piggy-backed initiatives, and cost-effective interventions to reduce their negative impact on the health and social and economic well-being of all peoples in the Americas. Four Latin American initiatives that promote gender equality in health were honored as “best practices” by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) at a special event marking International Women’s Day on March 9.
The four projects—from Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay—were the finalists in the fifth annual “Best Practices that Incorporate the Perspective of Gender Equality in Health” contest, organized by PAHO/WHO, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF).
This year’s contest highlighted initiatives that seek to transform men’s and women’s attitudes as a means of advancing gender equality, honoring two categories of projects: “gender and health” and “gender and safe motherhood.”

About the OAS Policy Roundtables
Launched in January 2007, this program seeks to enrich the discussion of the hemispheric agenda by bringing together policy analysts and the diplomatic community to dialogue on key issues affecting the region. The OAS Policy Roundtable series is designed to promote informal dialogue among specialists and the political decision-makers on the full range of issues on the OAS agenda. By providing an environment different to the formal political bodies’ kind of format, the policy roundtables embrace academic representatives and opinion leaders who express their views to complement those from Member States.
In addition to the Honduran program, another program that was honored as Malaria Champion of the Americas was theCommunity Surveillance of Malaria through Sentinel Sites program of Nicaragua.
Nicaragua’s Community Surveillance of Malaria through Sentinel Sites program employed systematic surveys developed by the Network of Community Volunteers and Partners and health teams to assess local malaria transmission patterns. The surveys focused on community attitudes and behaviors, including knowledge about malaria and utilization of bed nets. They were carried out with support from health organizations, a regional university, the Army Medical Corps of Nicaragua, municipal governments, and Nicaragua’s Ministry of Education.
The Malaria Champions of the Americas contest, launched in 2008, seeks to identify, celebrate, and provide avenues to emulate best practices and success stories in malaria prevention and control.
Tres organizaciones radicadas en Honduras, Brasil y Nicaragua fueron homenajeadas como “Campeones contra el Paludismo en las Américas 2011”, por sus iniciativas exitosas en reducir los casos y muertes de esta enfermedad. Los ganadores fueron presentados al celebrarse por quinto año el Día del Paludismo en las Américas en la sede de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS).
El Programa “Campeones del Paludismo en las Américas”, lanzado en 2008, pretende identificar, celebrar e inspirar la continuidad de la excelencia en el trabajo contra esta enfermedad que se realiza en los países de la región. El premio principal del Campeón del Paludismo de las Américas se lo llevó el proyecto de Honduras, llamado “Manejo integral de la malaria en Wampusirpi en el Departamento de Gracias a Dios”, que logró disminuir los casos de malaria en más de un 80% entre junio de 2010 y junio 2011.
Suriname,was honored as "Malaria Champions of the Americas" during
the fourth annual Malaria Day in the Americas, at the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO). PAHO presented the top "Malaria Champion of the Americas" award to the National Malaria Board of Suriname, which oversees efforts that have virtually
eliminated malaria from most of the country’s interior. Using funds from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the NMB has sponsored training for lay people on the diagnosis and treatment of malaria in gold mining areas, where the disease is now concentrated, and has improved surveillance in areas where the disease has been eliminated. The Board has also guided
collaborative efforts between Suriname and French Guyana to reduce high rates of transmission along their common border. In conjunction with the University of Suriname, the Board also established a Malaria Gene Bank to help monitor the development of resistance to
anti-malaria drugs.

Los ganadores fueron presentados al celebrarse por quinto año el Día del Paludismo en las Américas en la sede de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS). — Three organizations from Honduras, Brazil and Nicaragua were honored this week as Malaria Champions of the Americas for their successful efforts to reduce deaths and illnesses from this disease. The winners were presented during an event marking the 5th annual Malaria Day in the Americas, held at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).

The Safe Motherhood Initiative is a call to the countries of the Region to redouble their efforts to meet the targets of Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5: Reduce by three 3/4, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio, and achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproductive health. The Initiative also supports synergistic action to achieve MDG 3 (Promote gender equality), MDG 4 (Reduce child mortality), and targets of MDG 6 (Halt and reverse the spread of HIV) - La Iniciativa Maternidad Segura es un llamamiento a los países de las Américas para que redoblen los esfuerzos con el propósito de lograr el objetivo de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM) 5: Reducir en 3/4 partes, entre 1990 y 2015, la mortalidad materna, y lograr, para 2015, el acceso universal a la salud reproductiva. La Iniciativa también apoya acciones sinérgicas para lograr el ODM 3 (promover la igualdad entre los géneros), el ODM 4 (reducir la mortalidad infantil) y el ODM 6 (detener la propagación del VIH).

Rio de Janeiro, 19 October 2011 (PAHO/WHO) – High-level representatives from more than 100 countries are meeting this week in Rio de Janeiro for the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health, a World Health Organization (WHO) initiative aimed at building support for policies and strategies that seek to improve health by reducing social inequities.
More than 60 ministers of health and other cabinet members are participating in the conference along with representatives of civil society organizations, health experts and others. They will examine how social factors such as income inequality, living conditions, educational opportunities, gender, race and ethnicity impact people’s health. Participants will also share successful experiences from various countries and regions.
The conference is expected to produce a political declaration expressing the commitment of WHO Member States to address the social determinants of health through national action plans and strategies.
The World Conference on Social Determinants of Health will bring together Member States and stakeholders to share experiences on policies and strategies aiming to reduce health inequities. The event will provide a global platform for dialogue on how the recommendations of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health (2008) could be taken forward.

Health authorities from throughout the Americas opened the 51st meeting of the Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) praising the organization’s management in recent years and pointing to the challenges it faces in different areas of health. http://new.paho.org/blogs/cd51
These awards honor dedicated professionals who have led the way in advancing health conditions in the Americas during the last century. The Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program is a partnership between the Pan American Health Foundation and the Pan American Health Organization.
The Pan American Health Organization hosted the 20th Caucus of CARICOM Ministers responsible of Health on the 24th of September. Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director or PAHO, welcomed the participants and emphasized the leadership of the Caribbean on the high level meeting of Non-communicable Diseases of the United Nations held last week in New York. The Organization reaffirmed its support to all this important initiatives.
The Caribbean Community Chair, Hon. Dr. Denzil Llewllyn, recognized PAHO as a partner and discussed the meeting agenda, highlighting the need to discuss social marketing to develop public health programs, Non-communicable diseases and the incorporation of violence as a public health problem to be discussed. This meeting reunites the Caribbean Community and discusses the public health agenda for their countries and serves as a preview of the next week which will celebrate the 51st Directive Council in PAHO.

Public Health Agency (CARPHA) Executive Board on Friday 23rd September 2011 (PAHO Headquarters) which signals strong collaborative action for public health
in the Caribbean, of which the response to Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs), is
among the major priorities.
The CARPHA Executive Board are responsible for a number of other functions
including:
• setting the strategic direction of CARPHA
• ensuring promotion of public awareness related to public health; and
• encouraging the widest participation in public health awareness, including
Civil Society Organisations (e.g. Healthy Caribbean Coalition, Church
Groups, Youth groups etc), other non-governmental partners, Regional
partners, Countries etc
Side event hosted by the Countries of the Americas Region and PAHO/WHO in collaboration with the World Economic Forum. The Partners Forum, launched by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with Member States, the World Economic Forum, and other partners including from civil society and the
private sector seeks to address this. It will be a multi-sector platform to catalyze, recognize and scale up
collaborative action to promote health and achieve key objectives for the prevention and control of NCDs
at regional, sub-regional and country levels. The approach is highly relevant to all countries and will be
needed to intensify action after the UN High Level Meeting.
This event was an interactive dialogue to:
1. Share successful experiences of the countries of the Americas in responding to NCDs
2. Launch the architecture of the multi-stakeholders, Partners Forum, and gain commitment
from Member States and partners for the initial plan of action.

This was the kick-off for Wellness Week in NYC, which featured speeches by the Director of PAHO, the NYC Commissioner of Health, Harlem Chamber of Commerce, World Economic Forum, as well as local & state politicians. Dr. Mirta Roses spoke about Wellness Week in the Americas and the Mayor presented a Proclamation for Wellness Week in New York city. Additionally, the launch included a health fair, healthy activities, farmer's market & healthy foods demonstrations. PAHO featured a booth to promote information and give-away items. Towards the end of the event videos were shown with messages from Mayors of many cities in the Americas & how they are celebrating Wellness Week in their municipalities.

OPS y Ricardo Montaner desarrollan trabajo conjunto para abogar por protección de niños con capacidades especiales.
Una comisión de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) visitó La Ventana, institución creada por el cantautor y Campeón de Salud Ricardo Montaner y su esposa Marlene, para desarrollar un trabajo conjunto a fin de abogar por la protección de los derechos de niños, niñas y adolescentes con capacidades especiales, y promover espacios que faciliten su desarrollo integral y pleno.
Esta colaboración aspira a promover que los Estados de la región establezcan un marco de derechos para niños, niñas y adolescentes con capacidades especiales. La visita a La Ventana en Homestead, Miami, finca modelo iniciada por el cantautor en el 2005, se realizó este sábado 27 de agosto.

The monitoring system for quality of care in Mexico indicated that in 2000, only 34% of all persons with diabetes receiving care were reported to have adequate metabolic control. As a result, the Ministry of Health in Mexico included diabetes as one of the health priorities in a national campaign for service improvement called The Crusade for Quality Improvement. In this context, an intervention project is being carried out in five primary-care centers in Veracruz, Mexico.
The intervention is a joint program of the Ministry of Health and the Diabetes Declaration of the Americas (DOTA) through the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).
Under the slogan "Vaccinate your family, protect your community," the Nineteenth Meeting of PAHO's Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Vaccine-preventable diseases will take place in Argentina from 6 to 8 July.

What will the world’s population look like in 20 years?
If current demographic changes continue, the average age will be older in most parts of the world than it is today, more people will live in cities, and population growth will have slowed throughout the world except in Africa. These trends naturally result in changes in the burden of disease, most notably a transition from infectious to non-communicable diseases, from acute to chronic disease.

Supporting the Establishment of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) - Partners meeting at Pan American Health Organization headquarters to discuss the objectives of CARPHA in the context of regional and international imperatives for health and development, update partners on the development for the establishment of CARPHA, present the implementantion and sustainability framework for CARPHA and engage partners in establishing their collaboration with implementation of CARPHA.
Immunizing the world's children against infectious diseases has dramatically cut childhood death and suffering in recent decades. In 2010, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates called for a new "Decade of Vaccines" to vault the progress dramatically forward.
The June 2011 issue of Health Affairs, sponsored by the Gates Foundation, examines the strategies that will be needed to achieve the goal. These include making advances in basic vaccine science; devoting more money and other resources to developing vaccines for neglected diseases, such as those like hookworm infections that afflict the world's poorest people; helping to finance the rollout of critical new vaccines for conditions such as pneumonia and rotavirus; and fostering product development partnerships that bring pharmaceutical companies, global funders and others together to make new vaccines possible.
On World No Tobacco Day-31 May- WHO celebrates the successes of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in the fight against the epidemic of tobacco use. At the same time, WHO recognizes that challenges remain for the public health treaty to reach its full potential as the world's most powerful tobacco control tool.
Since it was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2003, 172 countries and the European Union have become Parties to the WHO FCTC. Among other measures, the Parties are obliged over time to: protect people from exposure to tobacco smoke/Ban tobacco advertising and sales to minors/Put large health warnings on tobacco packages/Ban or limit additives to tobacco products/Increase tobacco taxes/Create a national coordinating mechanism for tobacco control.
This year, the tobacco epidemic will kill nearly 6 million people, including some 600 000 nonsmokers who will die from exposure to tobacco smoke. By 2030, it could kill 8 million.

La cumbre tiene por objetivo evaluar las condiciones socioeconómicas de las poblaciones afrodescendientes y establecer consensos sobre estrategias, planes y acciones para el desarrollo con equidad de sus comunidades. Esta actividad se realiza en el marco del Año Internacional de los Afrodescendientes declarado por Naciones Unidas , y tiene el apoyo de organizaciones internacionales y de la sociedad civil, cuyos representantes estuvieron presentes en este lanzamiento.

La mandataria fue recibida por la Subdirectora de la OPS/OMS, doctora Socorro Gross, el Director Adjunto, doctor Jon Andrus, y expertos de la organización.

On the occasion of the presentation of The Washington Ballet's Carmen, a panel discussion explored the role of women as seen in "Carmen" and her myth at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The panel discussion was moderated by Ambassador Carmen Moreno, Executive Secretary, Permanent Secretariat, Inter-American Commission of Women (OAS). Panelists include Ines Alberdi, Executive Director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) until 2010; Joanne Sandler, Deputy Director for Programmes of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women); and Dr. Marijke Velzeboer, Coordinator of the Gender, Ethnicity and Health Office at the Pan American Health Organization. This lecture was presented by the Embassy of Spain and the Spain-USA Foundation in collaboration with The Washington Ballet and the Pan American Health Organization as part of Spain Arts & Culture 2011.

Actividades realizadas en el lanzamiento de la Semana de Vacunación en las Américas en Brasil
SVA 2011: Desde la primera SVA, como resultado de la iniciativa más de 288 millones de personas se han vacunado contra una amplia gama de enfermedades prevenibles mediante vacunación como son el sarampión, la rubéola, la fiebre amarilla, la difteria, el tétanos, la poliomielitis y la influenza.
Desde su inicio en el 2003, más de 323 millones de individuos de todas las edades se han vacunado.
PUNTOS VIDA: Campaña continua para la prevención y deteccion de males no transmisibles como el cáncer, diabetes, hipertensión arterial y obesidad a través de Puntos Vida (consultorios móviles equipados). El abuso del alcohol, tabaco, drogas, sedentarismo, falta de actividad física, malos hábitos alimentarios y la comida chatarra son factores para que la población tenga problemas de obesidad, sobrepeso, diabetes, hipertensión, enfermedades cardiacas, entre otros que son totalmente prevenibles.

El lanzamiento de la Semana de Vacunación en las Américas 2011 en Panamá se realizó el 26 de abril del 2011 en la comunidad de Veracruz. Estuvieron presentes el Dr. Franklin Vergara, Ministro de Salud de Panamá, la Primera Dama de la Republica, señora Marta Linares de Martinelli, el artista Ricardo Montaner, Campeón de la Salud de la OPS/OMS, la Dra. Socorro Gross, Subdirectora de la OPS/OMS y el Dr. Joaquín Molina, Representante de la OPS/OMS en Panamá.
En Bolivia la semana de Vacunacion se inició en la localidad de Kasani, frontera entre Bolivia y Perú el 26 de abril de 2011. La Directora de la OPS, Mirta Roses, identificó a la niñez menor de cinco años como una población importante que recibirá la vacuna, así como las personas de la tercera edad mayores de 65 años. Las mujeres en edades fértiles y embarazadas, también podrán acceder a la vacunación, al igual que el personal de salud y las poblaciones en riesgo.

Bajo el lema "Vacuna a tu familia, protege a tu comunidad”, ambos países fueron sede del lanzamiento regional de la Novena Semana de Vacunación de las Américas orientado a fortalecer los programas de inmunización contra las enfermedades más endémicas en niños, adolescentes, adultos y ancianos.
Unos 45 países y territorios de las Américas se movilizarán para lograr que unos 41 millones de niños y adultos se vacunen contra enfermedades prevenibles, durante la novena Semana de Vacunación en las Américas, que se celebra entre el 23 y 30 de abril.
World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the founding of WHO. Each year, the Organization selects a key global health issue and organizes international, regional and local events on the Day and throughout the year to highlight the selected area.
World Health Day 2011 will focus on antimicrobial resistance and its global spread. Antimicrobial resistance threatens the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today to treat the sick, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers.
To underline this, the WHO public awareness campaign will include a special focus on the HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria epidemics. WHO will call on governments and stakeholders to implement the policies and practices needed to prevent and counter the emergence of highly resistant superbugs, and to also provide appropriate care to those seriously affected by these microbes.
The annual walk is part of PAHO´s celebration of World Health Day, which this year is dedicated to combat drug resistance.

As the countries of the Americas work to decrease the burden of malaria in the Region, PAHO, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), the George Washington University Center for Global Health (CGH), and other partners seek to identify, celebrate, and provide avenues to emulate best practices and success stories in malaria prevention and control.
The "Malaria Champions of the Americas" Award honors innovative efforts that have significantly contributed towards overcoming the challenges of malaria in communities, countries, the Region, or the globe and have served as an inspiration in the global battle against malaria.

Ricardo Montaner, reconocido artista con una larga carrera como cantautor, recibió el Premio Campeón de la Salud de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) por su labor y apoyo en la Semana de Vacunación en las Américas, en la que ha participado desde 2007.
Montaner, que recibió su premio durante una ceremonia en la sede de la OPS/OMS, se suma así a un grupo de artistas y celebridades que la organización ha honrado por prestar su imagen y participación para promocionar campañas de salud en las Américas.

Since September 2010, the radio and community awareness staff of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) travels daily to a different location in Port au Prince where they broadcast a community radio program live on topics ranging from cholera prevention to preparedness in case of natural disasters, as was Hurricane Tomas.
On this occasion, in “Terrain Toto” one of the largest camps of displaced persons in Port au Prince, the radio staff and entertainers started the program with dances and games for the children while the community awareness team distributed educational materials and interacted with the audience.
This radio program is broadcasted daily to a nationwide audience. After each transmission listeners can call by phone to the radio’s central office for questions and comments. The program has been so successful in the community, that it has motivated its creators to continue with the live community presentations.
PROMESS (Program on Essential Medicine and Supplies) is Haiti's central pharmaceutical store, established in 1992 in Port-au-Prince. It is run by the Ministry of Health with support from PAHO/WHO, and distributes drugs and medical supplies to public health facilities and health centers throughout the country.

Since its inception in 2003, more than 288 million individuals across the age spectrum have been vaccinated as a result of the initiative. Multiple social communication campaigns have also been conducted under the framework of VWA, promoting vaccination to the public as an important preventative health measure. The eighth annual VWA took place between 24 April and 1 May under the theme of “reaching everyone”. This year, multiple VWA launching events were organized, including events in Nicaragua, on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and on the border between Suriname and French Guiana. This last event served as the first ever bi-Regional launch, linking the vaccination weeks of the Americas and Europe. The launching event was held on the 27th of April and counted with the participation of PAHO Director, Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, as well as high level authorities from the French and the Surinamese Ministry of Health.
Dr. Mirta Roses traveled to St. Laurent du Maroni, French Guiana, for a tri-national border launching event uniting French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil. Suriname's minister of health and high-level health officials from all three countries took part. After the launching in St. Laurent, the delegation traveled to a policlinic in Albina, to launch the activities in Suriname.

World Health Day 2010 is dedicated to urbanization and health. The campaign highlights the impact of urban living on human health and encourages efforts to make cities healthier places for people to live.
El Día Mundial de la Salud 2010 está dedicado al urbanismo y la salud. La campaña pone de relieve los efectos que tiene en la salud humana la vida en las ciudades y promueve iniciativas para convertirlas en lugares más saludables.
Displaced populations encounter many physical and mental health challenges. In addition to the lack of access to health services, these vulnerable individuals experience a loss of productivity and poor sanitation and living conditions.
In collaboration with international, national and local partners, PAHO/WHO aims to reduce emergency health needs of displaced populations.
Las poblaciones desplazadas se enfrentan con muchos problemas de salud física y mental. Además de la falta de acceso a servicios de salud, estas personas vulnerables experimentan una pérdida de productividad y condiciones deficientes de vivienda y saneamiento. En colaboración con socios internacionales, nacionales y locales, la OPS/OMS, tiene por objeto reducir las necesidades de emergencia de salud de poblaciones desplazadas.

After an emergency the first priority is to provide an adequate quantity of water, even if its safety cannot be guaranteed, and to protect water sources from contamination. During emergencies, people may use an untreated water source for laundry, bathing, etc. Water-quality improvements can be made over succeeding days or weeks.

Inaugurated in September 1965, the building provided the first permanent home for all of PAHO's U.S.-based staff, at the time about 300 people. It was designed by Uruguayan architect Roman Fresnedo Siri, who won a hemisphere-wide competition.
The building presented special architectural challenges because of legal height constraints (Washington buildings were not supposed to exceed 90 feet in height) and the triangular shape of the one-acre plot of land. Some contemporary observers referred to the building as a "little U.N." for its resemblance to United Nations headquarters in New York.
The U.S. government donated the building site, at the time valued at $1.1 million, while the W. K. Kellogg Foundation donated $5 million to finance construction. The Kellogg donation was considered a "loan" to be paid back by PAHO member governments through their quota contributions to support the organization's work.

En los años 60s y 70s se usó extensivamente el DDT para el control de vectores de la malaria en toda Mesoamérica. Experiencias exitosas de control de la malaria sin el uso de DDT se han desarrollado en México y países de Centroamérica. Se ha demostrado la eficacia de estrategias alternativas que promueven la participación comunitaria y la colaboración entre instituciones gubernamentales, ONGs y grupos civiles que trabajan a nivel local. Objetivos: Prevenir la reintroducción del uso del DDT para el control de la malaria a través de la demostración y evaluación de métodos alternativos e intersectoriales, que sean costo efectivos, replicables y sustentables. Beneficiarios: Poblaciones rurales afectadas por la malaria y por el uso pasado del DDT, asi como las instituciones del sector público, los trabajadores de control de vectores expuestos al DDT, mujeres y niños que viven en hogares cercanos a criaderos de vectores.

Central American countries are fighting malaria without the use of the synthetic pesticide DDT by using alternative methods and strong community participation.

In 2006 World Health Day was observed with the release of a comprehensive study of the global health workforce, The World Health Report pointed to a severe shortage of health workers in 57 countries. It noted that the shortage of health workers is impairing provision of essential, life-saving interventions such as childhood immunization, safe pregnancy and delivery services for mothers, and access to treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. More than four million additional doctors, nurses, midwives, managers and public health workers are urgently needed to fill the gap in these 57 countries. This shortage, combined with a lack of training and knowledge, is a major obstacle for health systems as they attempt to effectively respond to chronic diseases, avian influenza and other health challenges, the report found. World Health Day aims to draw the world's attention to the urgency of this crisis, while recognizing the dedication and achievements of health workers everywhere.
Nuevamente este año, trabajadores de salud de todo el continente coordinaron esfuerzos para avanzar hacia las metas de inmunización, después del esfuerzo de vacunación de 2004, que alcanzó a más de 43 millones de personas. Se coordinan actividades por países, se alistan las vacunas y se comienza un largo camino hacia todos los puntos de un país, desde las zonas periféricas urbanas hasta las áreas rurales más remotas a las que sólo se puede llegar por río o a caballo. Este año también se pondrá especial énfasis en las áreas fronterizas que históricamente tienen las coberturas más bajas de vacunación. The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) today called on the international community to provide financing for a new $2.2 billion plan from the Haitian government to eliminate cholera transmission over the next 10 years through major investments in water and sanitation. The new National Plan for the Elimination of Cholera in Haiti provides a blueprint for increased investments in water and sanitation infrastructure, water-quality monitoring systems and water and sanitation management. It also includes health measures for prevention, surveillance, and case management; interventions for community-based behavior change; and vaccination for targeted groups against cholera. Three government-supported anti-malaria programs from Paraguay, Brazil, and Ecuador were named Malaria Champions of the Americas this week for their success in reducing the burden of malaria through improved diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance. The top Malaria Champion of the Americas award went to the National Malaria Control Program of Paraguay, which has reduced the burden of malaria by focusing on the elimination of local transmission and the use of a systematic model for testing, treating, and tracking malaria cases that emphasizes community volunteers, strategic supervision, support of personnel, assurance of quality services, and effective use of local resources. By 2020 the Americas will have 200 million older people, almost double that of 2006 and with more than half living in Latin America and the Caribbean. The increase in life expectancy and consequent growth in the older population has brought about a health transition characterized by a rise in non-communicable disease and disability and a wider demand for healthcare.
The next 40 years, when population trends will tend to lean with economic growth, is a window of opportunity to prepare for the aging population.

Viral hepatitis is a main contributor to severe illness and death worldwide, constituting a major public health problem. It is a hidden disease affecting the Americas. Some preventive measures, such as hepatitis A and B vaccination or screening of donated blood, have been implemented in the Region. However, many asymptomatic people still carry the virus without knowing, raising the possibility of transmission. Moreover, diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis remain a challenge in the Region. PAHO has led the development of a regional strategy and action plan to reduce the burden of viral hepatitis infection and disease in the Americas by improving surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and control. On January 11 of this year, the presidents of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, together with representatives of PAHO/WHO, UNICEF, and the CDC, issued a call to action to eliminate cholera from both countries through new investments in water and sanitation infrastructure. Health authorities from throughout the Americas are gathering with representatives of civil society, academia and the private sector in Brazil this week for the first meeting of the Pan American Forum for Action on Non-communicable Diseases: “Transforming NCD Declarations into Actions.”
Participants will discuss joint efforts to address the epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are responsible for 80 percent of all deaths in the Americas. The Pan American Forum is a platform for information exchange and collaborative action involving all sectors of society. Brasilia, 7 May 2012 — Health authorities, academicians, and civil society representatives from throughout the Americas are gathered in Brasilia this week for a meeting of the CARMEN network, with the aim of exchanging experiences and discussing joint action to fight non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Region.
Participants include managers of non-communicable disease programs from 36 countries as well as representatives of 15 collaborating institutions in academia and civil society. Discussions will focus on how to translate the Declaration of the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (held in September 2011) into policies, programs and concrete actions.

The tenth anniversary of Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) will be celebrated from 21-28 April 2012.
VWA is an extraordinary effort led by the countries and territories of the Region to advance equity and access to vaccination. VWA activities strengthen the national immunization programs in the Americas by reaching out to populations with little access to regular health services, such as those populations living in urban fringes, rural and border areas and in indigenous communities. Since its inception in 2003, more than 365 million individuals of all ages have been vaccinated during campaigns conducted under the framework of VWA. Haiti today launched intensive vaccination activities to protect children against diseases including polio, measles and rubella, among others. A launch event was held in Port of Prince with the participation of national health authorities, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the GAVI Alliance, and other international organizations. “Today Haiti marks three important milestones in global public health: the launch of intensive activities for child health, the 10th anniversary of Vaccination Week in the Americas, and the first World Immunization Week,” said PAHO Director Mirta Roses Periago, at a special event held at Port of Prince City Hall. Over the past century life expectancy has increased dramatically and the world will soon have more older people than children. Ageing populations occur everywhere, but less-developed countries are witnessing the fastest change. This social transformation represents both challenges and opportunities. In particular, countries may only have a single generation to prepare their health and social systems for an ageing world. /

It kills more adults each year than AIDS, diarrhea, malaria, and other tropical diseases combined. TB can be transmitted in the air. TB remains the second-leading infectious disease killer in the Americas (after HIV/AIDS) despite significant progress in controlling the disease. Currently an estimated 23,000 people die each year from TB in the Americas, and 270,000—including 44,000 children—become sick with the disease. But these numbers reflect major progress in recent decades. Since 1990, TB cases have declined by 60 percent in the region, and TB deaths have declined by two-thirds. “It is my aspiration that one day in the not-too-distant future, we will see an America free of tuberculosis,” said PAHO Director Dr. Roses in a message marking World TB Day. “This goal can only be met with commitment from everyone.” Photos: © PAHO/WHOCholera in Latin America in the 1990s
A cholera epidemic in the 1990s killed some 12,000 people in 21 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It was brought under control after eight years of international public health efforts that included massive investments in water and sanitation infrastructure. Four Latin American initiatives that promote gender equality in health were honored as “best practices” by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) at a special event marking International Women’s Day on March 9.
The four projects—from Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay—were the finalists in the fifth annual “Best Practices that Incorporate the Perspective of Gender Equality in Health” contest, organized by PAHO/WHO, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF).

In addition to the Honduran program, another program that was honored as Malaria Champion of the Americas was theCommunity Surveillance of Malaria through Sentinel Sites program of Nicaragua.
Nicaragua’s Community Surveillance of Malaria through Sentinel Sites program employed systematic surveys developed by the Network of Community Volunteers and Partners and health teams to assess local malaria transmission patterns. The surveys focused on community attitudes and behaviors, including knowledge about malaria and utilization of bed nets. They were carried out with support from health organizations, a regional university, the Army Medical Corps of Nicaragua, municipal governments, and Nicaragua’s Ministry of Education.

Suriname,was honored as "Malaria Champions of the Americas" during
the fourth annual Malaria Day in the Americas, at the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO). PAHO presented the top "Malaria Champion of the Americas" award to the National Malaria Board of Suriname, which oversees efforts that have virtually
eliminated malaria from most of the country’s interior. Using funds from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the NMB has sponsored training for lay people on the diagnosis and treatment of malaria in gold mining areas, where the disease is now concentrated, and has improved surveillance in areas where the disease has been eliminated. The Board has also guided
collaborative efforts between Suriname and French Guyana to reduce high rates of transmission along their common border. In conjunction with the University of Suriname, the Board also established a Malaria Gene Bank to help monitor the development of resistance to

OPS y Ricardo Montaner desarrollan trabajo conjunto para abogar por protección de niños con capacidades especiales.
Una comisión de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) visitó La Ventana, institución creada por el cantautor y Campeón de Salud Ricardo Montaner y su esposa Marlene, para desarrollar un trabajo conjunto a fin de abogar por la protección de los derechos de niños, niñas y adolescentes con capacidades especiales, y promover espacios que faciliten su desarrollo integral y pleno.
Esta colaboración aspira a promover que los Estados de la región establezcan un marco de derechos para niños, niñas y adolescentes con capacidades especiales. La visita a La Ventana en Homestead, Miami, finca modelo iniciada por el cantautor en el 2005, se realizó este sábado 27 de agosto.

The monitoring system for quality of care in Mexico indicated that in 2000, only 34% of all persons with diabetes receiving care were reported to have adequate metabolic control. As a result, the Ministry of Health in Mexico included diabetes as one of the health priorities in a national campaign for service improvement called The Crusade for Quality Improvement. In this context, an intervention project is being carried out in five primary-care centers in Veracruz, Mexico.

If current demographic changes continue, the average age will be older in most parts of the world than it is today, more people will live in cities, and population growth will have slowed throughout the world except in Africa. These trends naturally result in changes in the burden of disease, most notably a transition from infectious to non-communicable diseases, from acute to chronic disease.

Immunizing the world's children against infectious diseases has dramatically cut childhood death and suffering in recent decades. In 2010, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates called for a new "Decade of Vaccines" to vault the progress dramatically forward.
The June 2011 issue of Health Affairs, sponsored by the Gates Foundation, examines the strategies that will be needed to achieve the goal. These include making advances in basic vaccine science; devoting more money and other resources to developing vaccines for neglected diseases, such as those like hookworm infections that afflict the world's poorest people; helping to finance the rollout of critical new vaccines for conditions such as pneumonia and rotavirus; and fostering product development partnerships that bring pharmaceutical companies, global funders and others together to make new vaccines possible.On World No Tobacco Day-31 May- WHO celebrates the successes of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in the fight against the epidemic of tobacco use. At the same time, WHO recognizes that challenges remain for the public health treaty to reach its full potential as the world's most powerful tobacco control tool.
Since it was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2003, 172 countries and the European Union have become Parties to the WHO FCTC. Among other measures, the Parties are obliged over time to: protect people from exposure to tobacco smoke/Ban tobacco advertising and sales to minors/Put large health warnings on tobacco packages/Ban or limit additives to tobacco products/Increase tobacco taxes/Create a national coordinating mechanism for tobacco control.
This year, the tobacco epidemic will kill nearly 6 million people, including some 600 000 nonsmokers who will die from exposure to tobacco smoke. By 2030, it could kill 8 million.Visita Directora de la OPS a Colombia
LANZAMIENTO - CUMBRE MUNDIAL DE AFRODESCENDIENTES
La Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS) fue sede, este 26 de mayo, del lanzamiento en Estados Unidos de la Primera Cumbre Mundial de Afrodescendientes , que se celebrará entre el 18 y 21 de agosto de este año en La Ceiba, Honduras.
La cumbre tiene por objetivo evaluar las condiciones socioeconómicas de las poblaciones afrodescendientes y establecer consensos sobre estrategias, planes y acciones para el desarrollo con equidad de sus comunidades. Esta actividad se realiza en el marco del Año Internacional de los Afrodescendientes declarado por Naciones Unidas , y tiene el apoyo de organizaciones internacionales y de la sociedad civil, cuyos representantes estuvieron presentes en este lanzamiento.

The panel discussion was moderated by Ambassador Carmen Moreno, Executive Secretary, Permanent Secretariat, Inter-American Commission of Women (OAS). Panelists include Ines Alberdi, Executive Director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) until 2010; Joanne Sandler, Deputy Director for Programmes of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women); and Dr. Marijke Velzeboer, Coordinator of the Gender, Ethnicity and Health Office at the Pan American Health Organization. SVA 2011: Desde la primera SVA, como resultado de la iniciativa más de 288 millones de personas se han vacunado contra una amplia gama de enfermedades prevenibles mediante vacunación como son el sarampión, la rubéola, la fiebre amarilla, la difteria, el tétanos, la poliomielitis y la influenza.
Desde su inicio en el 2003, más de 323 millones de individuos de todas las edades se han vacunado.
PUNTOS VIDA: Campaña continua para la prevención y deteccion de males no transmisibles como el cáncer, diabetes, hipertensión arterial y obesidad a través de Puntos Vida (consultorios móviles equipados). El abuso del alcohol, tabaco, drogas, sedentarismo, falta de actividad física, malos hábitos alimentarios y la comida chatarra son factores para que la población tenga problemas de obesidad, sobrepeso, diabetes, hipertensión, enfermedades cardiacas, entre otros que son totalmente prevenibles.

El lanzamiento de la Semana de Vacunación en las Américas 2011 en Panamá se realizó el 26 de abril del 2011 en la comunidad de Veracruz. Estuvieron presentes el Dr. Franklin Vergara, Ministro de Salud de Panamá, la Primera Dama de la Republica, señora Marta Linares de Martinelli, el artista Ricardo Montaner, Campeón de la Salud de la OPS/OMS, la Dra. En Bolivia la semana de Vacunacion se inició en la localidad de Kasani, frontera entre Bolivia y Perú el 26 de abril de 2011. La Directora de la OPS, Mirta Roses, identificó a la niñez menor de cinco años como una población importante que recibirá la vacuna, así como las personas de la tercera edad mayores de 65 años. Las mujeres en edades fértiles y embarazadas, también podrán acceder a la vacunación, al igual que el personal de salud y las poblaciones en riesgo.

Bajo el lema "Vacuna a tu familia, protege a tu comunidad”, ambos países fueron sede del lanzamiento regional de la Novena Semana de Vacunación de las Américas orientado a fortalecer los programas de inmunización contra las enfermedades más endémicas en niños, adolescentes, adultos y ancianos.
Unos 45 países y territorios de las Américas se movilizarán para lograr que unos 41 millones de niños y adultos se vacunen contra enfermedades prevenibles, durante la novena Semana de Vacunación en las Américas, que se celebra entre el 23 y 30 de abril.World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the founding of WHO. Each year, the Organization selects a key global health issue and organizes international, regional and local events on the Day and throughout the year to highlight the selected area.
World Health Day 2011 will focus on antimicrobial resistance and its global spread. Antimicrobial resistance threatens the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today to treat the sick, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers.
To underline this, the WHO public awareness campaign will include a special focus on the HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria epidemics. WHO will call on governments and stakeholders to implement the policies and practices needed to prevent and counter the emergence of highly resistant superbugs, and to also provide appropriate care to those seriously affected by these microbes.PAHO Walk for Health 2011 - Celebrating World Health Day

Montaner, que recibió su premio durante una ceremonia en la sede de la OPS/OMS, se suma así a un grupo de artistas y celebridades que la organización ha honrado por prestar su imagen y participación para promocionar campañas de salud en las Américas.

SpitzSince September 2010, the radio and community awareness staff of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) travels daily to a different location in Port au Prince where they broadcast a community radio program live on topics ranging from cholera prevention to preparedness in case of natural disasters, as was Hurricane Tomas.
On this occasion, in “Terrain Toto” one of the largest camps of displaced persons in Port au Prince, the radio staff and entertainers started the program with dances and games for the children while the community awareness team distributed educational materials and interacted with the audience.
This radio program is broadcasted daily to a nationwide audience. After each transmission listeners can call by phone to the radio’s central office for questions and comments. This year, multiple VWA launching events were organized, including events in Nicaragua, on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and on the border between Suriname and French Guiana. This last event served as the first ever bi-Regional launch, linking the vaccination weeks of the Americas and Europe. The launching event was held on the 27th of April and counted with the participation of PAHO Director, Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, as well as high level authorities from the French and the Surinamese Ministry of Health.
Dr. Mirta Roses traveled to St. Laurent du Maroni, French Guiana, for a tri-national border launching event uniting French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil. Suriname's minister of health and high-level health officials from all three countries took part. After the launching in St. Laurent, the delegation traveled to a policlinic in Albina, to launch the activities in Suriname.

Displaced populations encounter many physical and mental health challenges. In addition to the lack of access to health services, these vulnerable individuals experience a loss of productivity and poor sanitation and living conditions.
In collaboration with international, national and local partners, PAHO/WHO aims to reduce emergency health needs of displaced populations.
Las poblaciones desplazadas se enfrentan con muchos problemas de salud física y mental. Además de la falta de acceso a servicios de salud, estas personas vulnerables experimentan una pérdida de productividad y condiciones deficientes de vivienda y saneamiento. En colaboración con socios internacionales, nacionales y locales, la OPS/OMS, tiene por objeto reducir las necesidades de emergencia de salud de poblaciones desplazadas.

After an emergency the first priority is to provide an adequate quantity of water, even if its safety cannot be guaranteed, and to protect water sources from contamination. During emergencies, people may use an untreated water source for laundry, bathing, etc. Water-quality improvements can be made over succeeding days or weeks.

Inaugurated in September 1965, the building provided the first permanent home for all of PAHO's U.S.-based staff, at the time about 300 people. It was designed by Uruguayan architect Roman Fresnedo Siri, who won a hemisphere-wide competition.
The building presented special architectural challenges because of legal height constraints (Washington buildings were not supposed to exceed 90 feet in height) and the triangular shape of the one-acre plot of land. Some contemporary observers referred to the building as a "little U.N." for its resemblance to United Nations headquarters in New York.
The U.S. government donated the building site, at the time valued at $1.1 million, while the W. K. Kellogg Foundation donated $5 million to finance construction. The Kellogg donation was considered a "loan" to be paid back by PAHO member governments through their quota contributions to support the organization's work.Maternidades/Motherhood - Bru Rovira©

Objetivos: Prevenir la reintroducción del uso del DDT para el control de la malaria a través de la demostración y evaluación de métodos alternativos e intersectoriales, que sean costo efectivos, replicables y sustentables. Central American countries are fighting malaria without the use of the synthetic pesticide DDT by using alternative methods and strong community participation.

In 2006 World Health Day was observed with the release of a comprehensive study of the global health workforce, The World Health Report pointed to a severe shortage of health workers in 57 countries. It noted that the shortage of health workers is impairing provision of essential, life-saving interventions such as childhood immunization, safe pregnancy and delivery services for mothers, and access to treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. More than four million additional doctors, nurses, midwives, managers and public health workers are urgently needed to fill the gap in these 57 countries. This shortage, combined with a lack of training and knowledge, is a major obstacle for health systems as they attempt to effectively respond to chronic diseases, avian influenza and other health challenges, the report found. Nuevamente este año, trabajadores de salud de todo el continente coordinaron esfuerzos para avanzar hacia las metas de inmunización, después del esfuerzo de vacunación de 2004, que alcanzó a más de 43 millones de personas. Se coordinan actividades por países, se alistan las vacunas y se comienza un largo camino hacia todos los puntos de un país, desde las zonas periféricas urbanas hasta las áreas rurales más remotas a las que sólo se puede llegar por río o a caballo. Este año también se pondrá especial énfasis en las áreas fronterizas que históricamente tienen las coberturas más bajas de vacunación. Para reforzar esfuerzos en estas zonas, se realizarán múltiples lanzamientos simultáneos en ciudades hermanas.
