Peru Introduces National Strategy Against Traffic Accidents

The plan was presentated by the Minister of Health, Dr. Oscar Ugarte, who said that given the growing number of people who die or are injured by crashes and the huge social cost, the Ministry of Health considers traffic accidents a "public health problem" to be prioritized.

Peru loses more than a billion dollars each year because of traffic accidents, or 1.5 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The minister noted that total health spending in Peru is 4.5 percent of GDP.
