Research and Educational Opportunities
Two
programs are offered by the
Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in
Richmond, Virginia, USA:
First, VCU is one of 18 host
universities for the Hubert H. Humphrey
Fellowship Program, a Fullbright exchange activity that brings
accomplished professionals from selected developing countries of Africa, Asia,
Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and Eurasia to the
United
States at a mid-point in their careers for a
year of study and related practical professional experiences. Fellows are
nominated by U.S. Embassies or Fullbright Commissions based on their potential
for leadership. Fellowships are granted competitively to professional
candidates with a commitment to public service in academic, public and the
private sectors in a wide range of fields. In keeping with its mission, the VCU
Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies hosts Humphrey Fellowship Program in
Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment and Policy. The Program at VCU is jointly
funded by the U.S. State Department and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. We
would greatly appreciate your assistance in sharing information about this
program with university faculty as well as appropriate government officials and
treatment providers in the addictions field. Applications for the 2011-12
program year are currently being accepted, and we strongly encourage those with
an interest in substance abuse research, training and policy to apply. A program
brochure is attached and you can learn more about the NIDA Humphrey Fellowship
at: http://www.international.drugabuse.gov/research/fellowships_humphrey.html
The second program is the International Program in Addiction Studies
(IPAS). IPAS is a unique online programme of graduate study leading to the
Master of Science degree. Both full-time (12 months) and part-time (24 months)
study options are available. The program was jointly designed and implemented by
the academic staff of King’s College London,
University of
Adelaide (
Australia) and VCU, with lectures
provided by leading authorities from around the world. The aim of the programme
is to develop professionals who are highly prepared to assume leadership roles
in the addictions field at the local, national and international levels. The
programme provides students with an advanced educational experience covering the
scientific basis of addiction, comparative epidemiology, evidence-based
interventions (including pharmacological, psychosocial and public health
approaches), research methodology, and addictions policy. Again, we invite you
to share this information with others who may be interested in this innovative
educational opportunity. Additional information about IPAS is provided at the
programme’s website: www.adelaide.edu.au/addiction
