| Nutrition - Welcome |
|
Nutrition is both an indicator and outcome of national development. Seven of the Millennium Development Goals--to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, ensure environmental sustainability, and combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases-- are directly related to nutrition. PAHO Strategy and Plan of Action for the Reduction of Chronic Malnutrition |
Malnutrition has a negative impact on economic growth and perpetuates poverty through direct losses in productivity; indirect losses from poor cognitive function and deficits in schooling; and losses because of increased health care costs. In the Region of the Americas, the Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) lost because of nutrition related non communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes amount to 12.5 million in addition to the 4.6 million lost because of maternal and young child malnutrition. Micronutrient deficiencies are also widespread.
