El Paso, TX, September 5, 2012 (PAHO/WHO) –  The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) United States-Mexico Border Office, in honor of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, called on journalists in the border region to submit entries for an award in the best in ethical journalism in the categories of print media, television, radio, and electronic media, published or aired in 2011-2012. The goal was to recognize the journalists and the pieces of work that that best addressed the issues and realities of the region while promoting the values of the Pan American Health Organization and contributing to progress in health and well-being. Journalists from both sides of the border, both independent and those who contribute to local media, participated in the contest. The winners will be recognized in an awards ceremony as part of the:

PRINT MEDIA

• Mr. Joseph J. Kolb is recognized for his article “Glimmer of Normalcy” which examines the varied elements that have played a role in the state of affairs in Juarez and tells of citizens ready to usher in a change.

• The team from the program “Los Reporteros” on Televisa, Guillermo López Portillo, Constantino Arizmendi, Raúl Remero, and Alex García, for their report “Sobrevivientes de Juárez” (The survivors of Juarez) which uses testimonials to document the transformation undergone by Juarez, and ends with highlighting the efforts of citizen organizations, including documenting the activities offered by the program “A Ganar” (Let’s Win) to win back the community.

• The team at diariotv.com.mx, Antonio Rebolledo, Omar Limón, and Omar Morales, for their online report “Hambruna en la Sierra” (Famine in the Sierra) about the drought and the issues being faced by the Tarahumara tribe that raises questions about what needs to get done to mitigate their suffering.

SPECIAL AWARDS

• Mr. Luis Escalera iss recognized for his Exemplary and Sustained Contribution to ethical journalism that highlights the reconciliation and recovery of Cd. Juárez.
• Ms. Melissa del Bosque is recognized for her article “El lugar más peligroso de México” (The most dangerous place in Mexico) published in Nexos magazine about the Valle de Juarez region for the importance of the issues it raises.
